Overview

In their book PHILANTHROPY ... A Big Word for Big-Hearted People, Jan and Rachel share inspiring real-life stories of young, Big-Hearted People (BHP), all of whom have done amazing philanthropic work. In this fun-filled and emotional exploration of the word "PHILANTHROPY" and the trail-blazing kids who bring the word to life, young readers are encouraged to make philanthropy a part of their lives at an early age. The message: It is never too soon to combine your talents and your compassion to become a philanthropist and a BHP forever! A quick note: A portion of the proceeds from each book purchase will go to support Blessings in a Backpack, an organization fighting child hunger and improving educational success. Blessings in a Backpack is a unique program designed for children of families that qualify for the federal free and reduced meal program. Blessings in a Backpack provides those children with food for the weekends, at home, transported in a reusable backpack. Jan and Rachel are committed to supporting this organization, and by buying this book you have joined other BHP in doing so as well. Thank you!

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 35—What could have been a great collection of profiles about kids who have made a difference in their communities is unfortunately a saccharine package of amateurish illustrations and cheesy rhymes. The young heroes are identified by name but are depicted as simplistic, hokey cartoon figures that they may or may not resemble. And the poems...oh dear, the poems. There's this: "On Thanksgiving, most people eat turkeys and pies,/And think about Pilgrims and Indian guys." And this: "These boys and girls can't help that they're sick,/But often are people the bullies will pick." As if the painfully substandard artwork and poetry weren't enough, each profile faces a page on which the word "philanthropy" appears vertically. A related word starting with one of the letters is highlighted in acrostic fashion, such as "People," "Help," "Important," etc. The Helsons incorporate the words into maudlin statements about philanthropy that increase in length, so that there is a drawn-out culminating declaration about the importance of giving to others.—Alyson Low, Fayetteville Public Library, AR
