Description: This update of a comprehensive reference on phlebotomy has an associated website replete with additional learning tools (videos, games, flashcards, etc.). The previous edition was published in 2012.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide "accurate, up-to-date, and practical information and instruction in phlebotomy procedures and techniques, along with a comprehensive background in phlebotomy theory and principles." The print and online formats are complementary, with the website providing the information in different formats to aid in learning and teaching. Both the book and accompanying website meet the stated objectives.
Audience: This is intended as a instructional book for students and a reference for practitioners of phlebotomy. The title definitely meets the needs of the intended audience.
Features: This book covers everything you might ever want to know about phlebotomy. This edition augments many of the superlative features of previous editions. While the same major categories are covered, there is enhanced use of color, call-out boxes, and other eye-catching formatting to enhance the learning experience. New to this edition is the inclusion of NAACLS requirements for each of the major categories — a great way to learn and simultaneously ensure students are prepared for the certification examination. I loved every edition of this book, and love this one too. It has the same superlative features — handy procedures for training, quick exam questions at the end of each chapter, lots and lots of pedagogically superb "how to do" pictures, etc.
Assessment: This is truly one of a few authoritative references on phlebotomy (the others include Applied Phlebotomy, Ernst (Wolters Kluwer, 2005), and Complete Textbook of Phlebotomy, 4th Edition, Hoeltke (Cengage Learning, 2013)). If you are learning or practicing phlebotomy, you will want the newest edition of this book handy for everyday use. You'll love the online resources too.
