Overview

Phoenix Crystal by Donovan Deleware

Fenton Dreslow was a Mordathion in dire straits. All he wanted was out of his lift contract with the Thieves' Guild, and the gracious Master Timble gave him the way out. "Bring me back the Phoenix Crystal," he told the desperate thief "and your contract is fulfilled." Sounds easy, right? But none have seen the legendary artifact since the dawn of time when man first stole the secrets of immortality from the gods. Given one year to complete his final contract, Fenton sets off with Marlee - a serving girl with a mysterious past, to bring about the impossible.

Join Fenton and Marlee as they journey across the world of Scyaneth in search of the elusive Phoenix Crystal. Meet all new races - the Mordathions and Eldarians, and discover creatures born of the stuff of legend, blood-sucking plants, and much more

What sets Deleware apart is his ability to both simultaneously scene-build with evocative language (but not lengthy, florid descriptives) and create developed characters through natural dialogue and witty banter. This adventure is fun, exciting and epic all at once. I can't wait to read more of Deleware and see what else he has to offer.

I'm a big fan of fantasy novels, and Phoenix Crystal exemplifies the kind of writing I like to see in them. Deleware has created a compelling world with an engaging character cast, an artifact to be recovered, and myriad mysteries about our cast to be solved along the way. Classic - but not contrived.
