Purpose: According the editors, it is intended as a concise reference of important information needed in the daily clinical practice of physical medicine and rehabilitation. There is currently not a clear-cut reference to use to get important clinical information quickly, and this book does an adequate job of attempting to fill that void.
Audience: It is designed to be an introduction for medical students and residents during the early stages of their careers in physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as a reference for physicians later in their careers. Although it does contain information important for even seasoned practitioners, overall the book is best suited for medical students and residents.
Features: The first two sections are a comprehensive overview of the practice of rehabilitation in various settings and the roles of the allied health professionals on the rehabilitation team. The third section concisely covers key rehabilitation topics, spanning the breadth of the field. The last section of appendixes offers a quick reference of important clinical information, including medication information and assessment tools, such as the NIH Stroke Scale Score Sheet, common gait deviations, and the ASIA examination, that can be useful in daily clinical practice.
Assessment: Because of the broad nature of the field, it is quite difficult to design a comprehensive yet concise guide, but this book provides a great introduction for anyone wishing to learn about physical medicine and rehabilitation while providing key information for residents as they are progressing through their training.
