Children's Literature - Mandy Cruz
Sorting is a skill every child learns by kindergarten. This book focuses on putting sorted data into a pictograph. Using toy animals the basic concept of graphing is introduced. The color photos invite readers to imitate what they see the kids in the book doing, in an attempt to be like them. The kids graph animals, mode of transportation to school, and balloon color. This fun practice reinforces the concept and children will not even realize they are learning two very critical math skills: sorting and graphing. Near the end of the book readers are challenged to graph things they find around the house making graphing fun. The Spanish translation is an excellent tool for kids who are learning a second language, whether that is English or Spanish. The book ends with reference pages that contain websites for more practice and a glossary in both English and Spanish making it an invaluable reference book for math and language.
