I picked up my copy at an Oxfam Bookshop in Beverley in East Yorkshire and found that I couldn't put it down. The author was a Bible-believing pastor who had been on archaeological expeditions in the Holy Land, himself-- not just an armchair scholar. The whole book is a good introduction to the subject of conservative Biblical archeaology-- a science which repeatedly confirms the reliability of the Bible as an historic document (not just a collection of fables). The black-and-white photos in the book will, in large part, be familiar to those who have already taken an interest in the subject, but are referred to in the text in a numbered way which gives the impression that one is watching a slide presentation with a narrative, not just reading a book. The book isn't long-- 171 actual pages of text in the 1981 edition. After an initial introduction to the subject which includes a description of how archaeology is done in the field, Boyd takes us through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, relating the finds of Biblical archaeology to Scripture. He shows how Biblical archaeology can shed light on the Bible, making its passages a bit less of a mystery. Throughout, he maintains an enthusiasm for Scripture that's contagious and inspiring. When I finished the book, not only did I really want to know more about Biblical archaeology, I also felt gloriously reaffirmed in my belief in the Bible as God's inerrant gift to mankind. Highly recommended as an introduction to the subject.
