My kids loved this book. Honestly, I dont why John Zodrow (the author) isn't writing more kids novels. They want me to read it to them nightly. And I agree with the Pixar comment below. Like Pixar, there's just enough in here for adults.

Pixar, where are you? It's funny, original with charming, outrageous characters. Moses, friends with a  smart-assed pig, a rooster with an attitude, an affectionate calf and a mad bull--all out to rescue their pals from a factory farm. Great stuff--crossover from 8-80.

Pig Out! is an important book, introducing a brand new world to children, filled with characters real and interesting, its prose vivid, clear, dramatic and funny. The story of a young boy who can't speak, but finds he can talk to animals, holds unexpected delights, with twists and turns to keep children's attention. Pig Out's information is accurate, clear, well organized. Its illustrations serve to expand the level of emotion and involvement. Grandparents and parents will regard its wisdom as perennial because the book's themes and values of rising above your limitations, sacrificing and caring for family, treating animals (and friends) with dignity and respect, helping neighbors whether they ask or not are intrinsically necessary for our social fabric. Pig Out! is about Moses, a boy who can't speak, but learns he can talk to animals. He loves his friends, Reddy, the pesky pig, Rita Too, a calf, he saved at birth, Rhode Island Red, a love-starved rooster and Larry and Herbie, two stubborn, kick-crazy mules. So when some of his friends get stolen by a Factory Farm, Moses, despite all the obstacles stacked against him, manages to heroically and hilariously rescue them. While Pig Out! is about relating to values, friends and animals and treating them with dignity and affection, the book also explores the serious aspects of unhealthy food production, environmental destruction and cruelty toward animals in the present day agri-business system of mass production on factory farms. No one reading this book can come away dry-eyed once he/she sees the terrible toll taken in delivering food to our tables.
