After twenty years on the NYPD, Sam Jenkins and his wife Kate leave New York behind to retire in the Great Smoky Mountain small town of Prospect, Tennessee. But his retirement doesn't last long when he accepts the position of the town's new Chief of Police. One would think that this is a cushy position in a sleepy little Appalachian town, and normally it would be ... except for the occasional murders, criminal activities, and mischievious small town antics. And if that isn't enough, the mayor asks Sam to babysit C.J. Profitt, a hometown girl turned famous country music star, who returns home for a charity benefit, only to stoke the fiery ire of a radical rightwing group called The Coalition for American Family Values. The Coalition is against C.J.'s flamboyant flaunting of her "corrupt" lifestyle, it goes against their way of living. A sassy country music star, dangerous threats, numerous murder attempts, and protecting the Dollywood music hall from destruction keeps Sam on his toes, determined to restore peace, law, and order to his Great Smoky Mountain small town. In the latest installment of the Sam Jenkins Mystery series, Pigeon River Blues, author Wayne Zurl weaves another intriguing tale of mystery and suspense that keeps the reader guessing as they follow Sam on his latest madcap adventure. Author Wayne Zurl engages the reader with a story that has a mixture of humor, intrigue, drama and suspense. His use of the local southern dialect stays true to the setting in the story, the reader feels like they are transported to the town of Prospect. I loved the fun banter that makes up the dialogue in the story, you can't help but get drawn into the story as the characters come to life. Sam is a sarcastic guy who has no problem saying exactly what he's thinking: his quick wit, sense of humor, friendly banter and sweet flirty side keeps the reader laughing out loud as the story unfolds. And when you add in the sassy and vibrant personality of country music star C.J. Profitt, mixed with the radical rightwing group's threats and crazy antics, the reader is in for a real treat with a storyline that is full of dramatic fireworks! With a quirky cast of characters; a rich description of the setting and the local dialect; and a suspenseful storyline full of intriguing twists and turns, Pigeon River Blues is an exciting continuation of the thrilling adventures found in the Sam Jenkins Mystery series! I would be remiss if I didn't mention that author Wayne Zurl utilizes his prior extensive knowledge and experience of police procedure to create a realistic story and series that diehard of mystery / detective fans will crave to read. Pigeon River Blues and the Sam Jenkins Mystery series is simply an addicting whodunit mystery series that will turn mystery fans into Sam Jenkins fans!

Wayne Zurl  in his new book, “Pigeon River Blues” a Book in the Sam Jenkins Mystery series published by Iconic Publishing gives us another adventure with Sam Jenkins. From the back cover:   When country singer C. J. Profitt returns home to sing on stage in Dollywood, Mayor Ronnie Shields asks Sam to babysit. It is anything but a simple job as C. J. can be her own worst enemy. But she isn’t the only one as the Coalition for American Family Values isn’t shy about letting her know she isn’t welcome. Sam breaks in John Gallagher, an old friend and new Police Operations Aide, on the job to help C. J. keep her Dollywood date and everyone starts learning a new language. The past has a way of resurfacing in the present and enemies can come from very unexpected places. When my wife and I were relocating from New York to California we drove across America and one of the States we fell in love with was Tennessee and one of the cities was Gatlinsberg. I mention all of  this because a lot of the events in the book take place near and around there which made it very pleasant, at least for me. I have always liked the small city police chief stories that used to be quite popular but seem to have been cast aside. Mr. Zurl has rescued this genre, given us new stories and a new chief Sam Jenkins. This is quite a plot that Mr. Zurl has given us as protecting singer C.J. Profitt is not going to be easy. However if it were easy then we probably would not read this story. Sam Jenkins is a wonderful character that will keep you entertained as you enjoy this new adventure. I am looking forward to more Sam Jenkins stories. Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Partners In Crime.   I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. 4 STARS This is a new series for me, Now I wish I could read all of the Sam Jenkins mysteries. This does a good job of standing alone, I don't feel I missed anything. The plot is easy to follow. I like Sam Jenkins character. Sam is a retired NY cop who has moved down to Tennessee. Now Sam is a police chief of a force of 13. He is funny to lighten things. He is also a flirt. He knows his job. I like the characters and want to see more of them. I love all the secondary characters. Sam is asked by the Mayor to be a bodyguard to C.J. Profitt while she has come home to be part of a fundraiser with Dolly Parton at Dollywood. C.J. has got 6 letters threatening her if she comes back to her hometown with her sinning ways. C.J. Profit is a famous singer. She is very vocal about preferring women. She is also abrasive to the cops. Another ex-cop from New York is hired to work for Sam. He needed to go back to work to make ends meet. He is staying with Sam. The setting is Pigeon River, TN in the Smokies Mountains I like reading Wayne Zurl Pigeon River Blues. Look forward to reading more of his books. I was given this ebook to read for purpose of giving an honest review and to be part of Pigeon River Blues.

C.J. Profitt is a country music superstar who hails from Prospect TN. When she announces her return to Prospect for a benefit concert, not everyone is eager to welcome the controversial star. In fact, a small group of hometown crazies have decided to send her a series of threatening letters, prompting the mayor of Prospect to call in the expert - Prospect police chief and ex-big city cop, Sam Jenkins. Will Sam be able to protect Profitt and get to the bottom of the increasingly hostile threats against her, or will the prickly country music star refuse to cooperate and put Sam and his officers at risk? Author, Wayne Zurl, brings his own big city police experience to the table in his latest novel. He's created a clever, hilarious, sometimes-over-the top character in Sam Jenkins. Sam is an incurable flirt and a smart ass. He also knows when he's being ornery (as my grandpa used to say), but can't seem to help himself. He's on his best behavior when he's with his wife, Kate, and on his worst behavior any time he thinks he can get away with it. But you can't help but love him. When necessary, Sam casts his humor aside and can rough up a criminal to get the answers he needs. He's is a well-drawn, multifaceted character who is full of surprises. Sam is what makes this series one-of-a-kind. But it's not all about Sam... The secondary characters in this novel are fantastic. I was constantly laughing at John Gallagher and his unique take on the English language. I adore Kate, Sam's beautiful, elegant wife. The characters in this novel are complex, and though some are thoroughly unlikable, they are all unique. If you're looking for a fun, fast-paced, intelligent read, give Pigeon River Blues a try.
