Pilgrim Heart

It's hard to say whether hindsight is an effective tool or not when it comes to music. To look with a critical eye back over the span of an artist's career may not be exactly fair, but it seems quite useful to a listener trying to make a selection of, say, a greatest-hits collection versus individual releases. The work of Krishna Das is a great example. If you examine his albums closely, you will begin to notice a few trends in the track listings. More than once has he done "Hanuman Chaleesa," "Devi Puja," and "Hara Hara Mahadeva," though the former makes nary an appearance on this particular record. However, Sting does. He chirps his way through "Mountain Hare Krishna" with that ever-entrancing Sting voice of his. Of course, the song "Mountain Hare Krishna" was reincarnated on Das' Live on Earth release in 1999. What to do? If you're a hardcore kirtan lover, then you'll want this on your shelf. If you're only looking for a Das sampler, you'd do better to pick up his Live on Earth. That way you throw a wider net capturing his work, and as a bonus you get to avoid the very odd, slightly disconcerting, calypso-style "The Ring Song."

Musician/composer Krishna Das celebrates the precepts of Devotional Yoga by crafting modern melodies, which are sung in call and response form with intricate world-beat accompaniments. These upbeat, joyous songs are appealing, accessible and surprisingly varied, ever-evolving through changes in verse and melody. The chorus of response-singers is billed as the ¿Kirtan Posse¿, ¿Kirtan¿ being the chanting of mantras as a meditation and an expression of devotion. Krishna Das describes his practice as ¿¿a process of opening up the heart, letting go of fear and self-judging and allowing myself to be me. Chanting has deepened and continues to deepen the pathway for the river of love to flow into me and through me.¿ Music has always played a central role in the expression and affirmation of human faith. ¿Pilgrim Heart¿ succeeds admirably, both as a heartfelt testament, and a true listening pleasure, whatever your religion. This uplifting music will make you want to smile and share your own love with the world! The previous recording of Krishna Das and friends, ¿Breath of the Heart¿, features additional compositions of original chant music, performed in a similar style. Other musicians who offer modern renditions of Hindu prayers are singer Singh Kaur and harpist Kim Robertson, in their ¿Crimson Collection¿ series, and the group Rasa, in their albums ¿Union¿ and ¿Devotion¿.

I was visiting Hawaii few weeks ago and i happen to walk in to store that sold souvenirs and this CD was playing in background. I went over to the counter and ask them who is this artist and do they sell the CD. They told it was Krishna Dass and I could get at Borders. But when I went over to Borders in Maui ¿ it was sold out. I was so disappointed. When I came over to my home country (Malaysia), I logged into B&N and voila, I saw it. I did not hesitate even for a sec and ordered it. It was pretty pricey (after the conversion & mailing delivery) but it was worth it every penny. You see I am a Hindu but I am sometimes too busy to do my prayers. But having this CD in the car ¿ helping me to recite especially my Shiva mantras is wonderful. It is so difficult to get Shiva Mantra recited in such stimulating way ¿TQ very much Krishna Dass¿you are god¿s gift to mankind. Om Nama Shivaya.
