In 2011, at 57 years old, Neil Hanson began a 3400-mile cross-country bicycle journey, exploring an America that can only be discovered on winding backroads from the saddle of a bicycle.
More than just a travelogue of a bike ride across the country, Hanson's delightful and beautifully written story takes the reader on a journey that is engaging and insightful, often hilarious, sometimes poignant, and always inspiring. It's a must-read adventure that will stir your soul.
Pilgrim Wheels by Neil Hanson is a cycling adventure starting in California all the way to Kansas. It's great read for anyone, but especially for those of us who will never actually experience this type of adventure. This is a book to savor. It is a physical adventure, sometimes very scary, nail biting, near death adventures. It's also an adventure of the soul. I enjoy learning life lessons along with Neil. The quotes he's collected and shares throughout the book are very insightful. One of my favorites is a Hopi proverb, "Wisdom comes only when you stop looking for it and start living the life the Creator intended for you." Whether you read Neil's book to use as a road map for your own bike trip or vicariously like I did, it's a good book.
