A fabulous read and gripping tale of the times and lives of pirates.. But not any pirate, but Captain Jack Sparrow. His being and reason of behavior are explained so that what we see in the movies of Pirates of The Carribean now make total sense. A wonderfully written and detailed novel that I fully recommend to one and all. Dr. Jamal.f

This book provides some great back story on the Pirates of the Caribbean universe. It tells how Jack got the Pearl, how he met Cutler Beckett, and more about the Pirate Lords. It was an interesting look at another side to the movies. There are also mature topics such as slavery and some "heavy petting" but it is pretty PG-13.

This book was sooooo good, good doesnt even explain it. In my opinion there is no word to describe it. The book explained alot of the stuff mentioned in the movies that the films never answered. This is a must read!!!! even if your not a pirates fan, its a great adventure to read about. I hope A.C. Crispin will write another book on Jack Sparrow that explains what happened up until he reaches Port Royal in Curse of the Black Pearl.

A pretty fun ride through the early days of Jack Sparrow, if not a long one. Two books in one with intertwining, related stories, from Sparrow's younger days, crafted by Crispin, a master of back story as she proved with the Han Solo books in the 90s. Crispin captures the feel of the movies and mixes in some historical accuracy and elements of swords & sorcery, including African characters, revisits from Barbossa and Davy Jones and, of course, British baddies as Sparrow tries to play it straight but finds he's almost too good for it. A romantic triangle, murderous fellow pirates, greedy slave selling EITC men and even Americans come along for the ride in an adventure that's worth the effort. Recommended.

Okay so before i got this book, i was debating on getting it because of some reviews. There is sexual content, however it's not descriptive. It implies what they're doing, and talls abput the kissing before it. I highly doupt Disney would allow something more.
As for my review. It gives insight to Captain Jack Sparrow's back story with the East India Trading Company, and before that. I recommend it to any POTC fan.

I read the sample and loved it! I decided to purchase this book because i am a HUGE Pirates of the Carribean fan. It was really helpful to explain parts of the movie i did not understand and made me enjoy the movie better. I really would have enjoyed the read but it was spoiled by language and sexual content. This ruined the book for me and left me disapointed. Despite this unsettling fact, the book was fair, but if i knew this at the beginning i would not have read this book when presented with the decision.

I have read all of these pirate books ( exept for the day of the shadow) and all are extreamly well thought out in the sequence of events that take place. Of course there will always be those whom of which prefer to watch T.V all day. Well this book is exactly what every pirate fan dreams of reading.
Captian Jack has always charmed everyone he ever encounters on his voyages. But who isn't charmed by such a cute face? He always is telling himself/others that he is and never will be again a pirate. A similaritie between the book and movie is, Cutler bekett is still immensely terrifing. But you get to see alot of flashbacks that tell about how his mom and sister died and how he reacted to all that was going on in his life.
Thank you and enjoy the book.

Have you ever wondered what had happened before the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Would you believe that the great Captain Jack Sparrow was actually a merchant sailor for the EITC. Every wondered how he came to be Captain or even why Cutler Beckett hates pirates so much. This is the book for you.

Some of the reviews here are bad and do not make sense....did you read the book? Its a great prequel to the movies and starts out a little slow but in the end is all brought together for any fan of Jack Sparrow!

Ever since I had seen the first of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean Movies i've been hooked. Finding this I'll admit that I was a bit wary on whether or not it would do the movies any justice, seeing that they're so wonderful on their own. I'm happy to say that I was not dissapointed. Crispin did a great job illustrating the world of Jack Sparrow and his life before the first film! I hope one day Crispin decides to continue this series, even writting about Jack's life during this films. I would love to get a more in depth look to his thoughts. Happy Reading!
