This may be a first -- a techno concept album. The concept goes like this: a renegade DJ, and man of the future, is caught living in the present; his story is told through the music of a large array of DJs, musicians, producers and remix artists. Okay, so it's kind of a thin concept. But the music is absolutely slamming. DJ Scotty Marz, the brains behind this compilation, is a virtuoso turntablist, and his taste in collaborators is perfect. Fatboy Slim remixes FC Kahuna on the rock-hard "What Is Kahuna?," and there are equally fine remixes of Junkie XL's metallish "Saturday Teenage Kick" and of "Dum Dum Baby" by illbient drum'n'bass-heads Baby Fox. King Bee's "Back by Dope Demand" is typical hip-hop chest-thumping, but the Ultramagnetic MCs do a great job taking James Brown to the woodshed on "Watch Me Now." The continuous mix is a little annoying, but not enough to matter. Great stuff.
