Joliffe is a talented player with a knack for solving mysteries. He has been released from his duties as a spy and is on his way to meet up with his troupe. On his way to participate in the week long festival of plays on carts, he is given another assignment which may lead to a band of heretics. Or it may be just another dream of his spymaster. Joliffe is enjoying the challenges of mounting a play which has become known for it's dreariness when two men are discovered murdered. Now, he must fulfill his duties to two masters. A complicated plot will keep the reader interested and a surprise ending will cap a very nice read.

I began reading Margaret Frazer when I found her first Sister Frevisse novel The Novice's Tale and have enjoyed every book since and this one is no execption. Now she has two very wonderful characters solving mysteries-Sister Frevisse and Joliffe. In addition to the mystery she also mixes in a little history. Anyone who enjoys mysteries or who likes history will enjoy this book.
