Play/Play: The B Sides

Although, as Moby anticipates in his brief liner notes to this two-CD set, the idea of a B-side is antiquated in the CD era, augmenting singles with non-LP tracks is quite common. Thus, this special repackaging of Moby's 1999 blockbuster Play includes both the original album and a second disc that compiles 11 cuts issued alongside CD singles from the hit LP. (Both discs are housed in an attractive slipcase.) On the second CD, there is a decided emphasis on pretty piano motifs (such as the jazzy intro to "Summer"), but the diverse selections still reflect aspects of Moby's artistry perhaps not immediately apparent to fans who discovered him via Play; the restrained techno groove of "Sunday" recalls his eponymous debut, and the overall moody vibe of the disc echoes the final tracks of Everything Is Wrong. With its hazy curlicues on the ivories and upward-floating "yeahs," "Memory Gospel" could be the lost stepsister of the chill-out classic "White Love" by Dot Allison's old outfit, One Dove. In fact, only the opening "Flower" smacks of the archival folk song-sampling grooves of breakout Play tunes such as "Honey." A fine complement to a stellar album.
