I'm no history buff and I am ashamed to admit that I know very little about Thomas Edison-just that he invented the light bulb (or didn't he?). Anyway, I guess this utter cluelessness has helped me keep an open mind regarding the way he has been depicted in this story. While I don't exactly believe he could be so cruel, I felt that the way his character has been altered really did do well in giving this story some depth and a horrific, twisted feel to it that gives more than justice to its genre. Now I am loath to be anywhere near a video camera-at least for the time being. Playback: Light and Shadow opens with a scene that quickly touches the nerves, and with the subsequent scene lays on the mystery of the malevolent spirit earlier mentioned in the introduction. What is the nature of this spirit, and how will it come to form? And what's Thomas Edison got to do about it? You know that it would have something to do with a video camera, but how exactly will this piece of technology play into the fearful element of the plot? While a clear answer is never really revealed directly as to how the malevolent spirit came to be, this novella will definitely whet anyone's appetite for the movie in hopes that all other remaining questions will be given light by then-hopefully.
