Absolutely enchanting! I got so caught up in this novella I almost forgot about fixing dinner, in fact, it didn’t get started until 7 pm last night. I did not want to stop reading this book.  There is so much action packed into this story it could easily have been a full length novel without any problem. It’s Emma’s 21st birthday and her lifelong friend since kindergarten, Jason, shows up to show her a good time. He takes her to a circus and introduces her to all his strange friends, friends she never knew he had. They are soon swept into a fantasy world Emma had no idea existed and then they become involved in a quest to locate a Siren who has gone missing. The Siren has been taken because of her capability to brew up a love potion.  I must admit, I was drawn to the book because of the cover and the name, Playing Hooky, which to me suggested a promise of fun. There was no disappointment there. The two main characters, Emma and Jason, were so likable and I loved the idea that they each had secret feelings for one another—feelings that Emma felt would only ruin their friendship. I’m giving this novella 5 shining stars because I became so swept up in the action. I do wish it had been longer though, because when I got to the ending I wanted more and I sincerely hope that Ms. Webb continues on with the possible love story of Emma and Jason in a sequel.

Sometimes being normal is vastly over rated! This book sends you on a whirlwind adventure into all things supernatural. The book was fast paced and full of twists and turns keeping you on your toes at every turn of the page. The imaginative writing really made me feel as if I was part of this magical new world. It is a unique new story that will have you eagerly turning the pages to find out what happens next. Not only is this book filled with interesting creatures and tons of adventure it also has plenty of humor as well. These characters never ceased to make me laugh whether it was the banter between Jason and Emma or the crazy antics of their friends. I loved the relationship between Emma and Jason. They are best friends and you can tell. It was nice to see characters that didn’t just have insta love. There was history between them and even when they were fighting you could tell how much they cared for one another. Emma was stubborn and yet sweet. She has a rough time figuring out all of the crazy happenings in her life at the moment and it isn’t helped by her friend Jason. In fact he seems to make things worse, but even so she loves him. She is a fun character to get to know and I hope to find out more in later books. Jason was definitely the life of the party no matter where he was. He is fun loving and carefree, but he does have his serious moments. It is easy to see he cares deeply for Emma even when he is annoying her. I loved that he could always put a smile on both the reader and Emma’s face. This is a fun and adventurous new story that fans of fantasy will not want to miss! I cannot wait to see what else happens to these awesome characters.

I don't usually read novellas, as they seem too rushed and incomplete. But I loved this one. It was short and sweet, but still a good read. And it was New Adult. I LOVE New Adult. Jason shows up on Emma's birthday to give her a day of fun and intrigue. It's fabulous. The paranormal creatures are so cool. And Jason and Emma rock together. There chemistry and reactions to each other are so fun to read in my mind. I can't wait to read more. Honestly, everything about this book is straightforward and easy. It's a nice, light read. I love it and I can't wait for more.

An interesting idea for a NA paranormal romance. Playing Hooky was an imaginative book that was very cute. I only had one issue with this book and that was the world building. I liked the idea for it all, but I wanted to see it more developed. I felt like there were some holes. But, this is only the first novella in a series, so I hope that is changed in the next books. Emma was a great character. This girl was fierce. Her constant sarcastic quips brought humor into any situation. She was a very realistic character, a likable heroine. Jason was also great. He's loved Emma for years, but has never gotten up the nerve to say anything. And he's lived his life not knowing where he came from or even what he is other than not human. He was such a sweet guy. And the mystery of his origin had me anxious to find out the truth. The romance in this book was minimal. Throughout the story, it was more of Emma and Jason beginning to explore the possibility of a relationship than an epic romance. But it was still sweet. The plot moved fast. I suspected who the culprit was about halfway through, but it didn't diminish the thrills. And the ending left me burning with curiosity about what happens next. *I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review

In only 100 pages Playing Hooky screams its originality from the rooftops and I am sure it also said to me when it was passing "I really should have been longer" !!! ;-) At the beginning of the book the reader is introduced to a perfectly normal world - a girl skipping college on her 21st birthday to be taken out for a surprise by her best friend. Only the circus they visit is full of fantasy creatures, and Emma's best friend is hiding secrets of his own, and now they have a mystery to solve . . . . Emma and Jason were brilliant characters who bounce off each other so well, creating a comfortable atmosphere. I enjoyed the fact that they are both in love with each other, but too afraid to make the confession, and I would really like to see their relationship explored further. Playing Hooky would be an ideal read for fans of NA para-romance and I cannot wait to read more by Rita Webb, particularly in this series. This was given to me as a review copy, but this has had no influence on my opinion.

This was a really fun and extremely quick read. I loved it. The banter between Emma and Jason was incredible and there were many laugh out loud moments. As per previous birthdays, Jason takes Emma on an adventure that she'll never forget. He brings her in to a world that she never knew existed. I loved all the different creatures that were featured. I was really curious about Jason too. I'm pretty sure I know what his deal is but I'm looking forward to finding out more in the next book. From the very first page I couldn't get enough. It was very well written and captures the readers imagination. But the reasons I reduced a star were 1) I felt like it was waaay to short. It was only 100 pages. I would have loved for this to be a full length book. Because of the length I felt that things happened a bit too quickly. Which leads me to reason 2) When Emma is first introduced to all these creatures. I think she handled everything way too well. She never really questioned anything. She just took it all in her stride. I would have liked a bit more of a reaction out of her. Overall this was a quick, fun and exciting read that I would highly recommend.

So, this one was, well, different.  I won’t say I didn’t like it, but I really felt like it left off in the middle of the story. I really liked Jason and Emma. They have such great chemistry and are such great friends that you can totally feel their friendship developing into something more and deeper. Plus, every time you feel that you were just on the verge of learning something important, the book flips away and off you go again. I understand this was a novella, but still, it was really hard to get into this one based on the lack of everything. I really, really wanted to like this one, it was just really hard. I did love the cover, something about the orange just pulled me in.

This beautiful cover does nothing to highlight the wonderful story. While I wished this was full length novel, instead of just a novella, I found it funny, interesting, and romantic. The magical element is very believable. However, I felt that Emma seemed to accept it just a little too quickly and easily. My favorite thing about this book, was the characters. They were loveable and realistic. Even the grumpy dwarf (Gruff) was loveable in his own way. Speaking of Gruff, I felt that he was a character reminiscent of J.K Rowling's writing and I enjoyed that. Lastly, though miniscule in the grand scheme of things, I felt that this book needed another run through with editing. There was nothing big, but when a line like "blues as emeralds" pops out at you like it did, it sticks with you... Or, maybe that's just my OCD talking. All in all, I enjoyed the story and feel that the author is a good writer with great potential. Hope to read more from this author in the future.

**3.5 Stars** I went into reading this book without expectation. It ended up being a fun little romp with lots of magic! It's a short read but it packs in the adventure. Emma and Jason have been best friends since kindergarten. They were always going on mad adventures in search of fairies and magical mudpies that would make them fly. When Jason shows up at Emma's door on Valentine's Day, which also happens to be her 21st birthday, promising a day full of fun, she has no qualms playing hooky! ;) Little did Emma know she'd get a glimpse of a world she only dreamed existed - full of all the magical beings she and Jason used to search for. But someone has stolen a siren in order to craft a love potion and it's up to Emma and Jason to find the culprit and stop them. Overall, I liked Playing Hooky. It was a quick read with lots of action and fun characters. It even has unicorns!! I felt it ended a bit abruptly but I'm hoping the next in the series will pick up with Emma and Jason. I'd like to see what other antics they can get up to! :)

This is a short book, so I felt it hard to get into because of the rapidness of scenes changing. BUT have no fear this is a novella into a series! You all know I loves me a great series and I believe this is will be one.

I must admit that Playing Hooky's gorgeous cover initially caught my attention, but once I read the description, I was totally hooked! As a novella, it's a pretty quick read, but it still manages to pack a lot of action and feeling into one little story. Playing Hooky was an amazing start to the Paranormal Investigations series and I can't wait to read more! I loved Jason and Emma, and I absolutely adored their chemisty and the fact that they have such an intricate back story. They've been best friends since they were kids, and while they may just be best friends at the moment...I'm positive it won't be long before they become best friends and more...much more! Along with the awesome chemistry and banter between, Playing Hooky was full of an interesting mixture of paranormal creatures, and I loved getting to meet and learn about them all for the first time with Emma. I also can't wait to find out more about all of the paranormal creatures and see what else Jason and Emma end up investigating! I'm also extremelty curious to find out more about Jason! He's totally a mystery right now and I'm curious to find out more about his unknown past. Overall, I think that Playing Hooky was an awesome novella, and it left me excited to read more of this series in the future! :D *This review is also posted on my blog and other social media sites.
