2013 Winner — Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award — Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror

It’s Halloween, and life is grim for twenty-three-year-old Dimitri Petrov. It’s the one-year anniversary of his parents’ deaths, he’s stuck on page one thousand of his Rasputin zombie novel, and he makes his living writing obituaries.

But things turn from bleak to terrifying when Dimitri is assigned to cover a séance at the reputedly haunted Aspinwall Mansion. There, Dimitri meets Lisa, a punk-rock drummer he falls hard for. But just as he’s about to ask her out, he unwittingly unleashes malevolent forces, throwing him into a deadly mystery. He wakes up in the morgue — icy cold and haunted by a cryptic warning given by a tantalizing female spirit.

As town residents begin to turn up gruesomely murdered, Dimitri must unravel the connections among his family, the Aspinwall Mansion, and the secrets held in a pair of crumbling antiquarian books. If he doesn’t, it’s quite possible Lisa will be the next victim.

This was a book that had it all ghosts, haunting and a good murder mystery. This was the authors first book and could be confusing in spots. The title is a little misleading since this book has nothing to do with Edgar Allan Poe. I think it could have used some fine tuning, but I'm sure as this author writes more she will improve. ***I received this book in exchange for an honest review****

Wow. This book was unlike anything I've ever read and just downright good from cover to cover. A mix of horror, fantasy, comedy, and romance - it has a little something for everyone. I loved Dimitri's voice. The way he looked at life, others, himself - I could completely identify with him and he had me laughing more than once. The guy loses both his parents in a car accident, is writing a subpar Rasputin zombie novel, writes obituaries for a living and wakes up in a morgue - you've really got to maintain a sense of humor to get through all that. The intriguing mystery with Aspinwall Mansion, the female spirit, old books, family connections and the gradual reveal were done well, with some twists and surprises along the way. As far as characters, you loved some and hated others and to me, that's great character development to provoke those feelings in a reader. A fast-paced novel, loveable (and unloveable) characters, supernatural elements, suspense, with some humor and a little romance thrown in - what's not to like? As a warning, there were some dark moments that may not be for the faint of heart. I'm not surprised at all that Poe was the 2013 Winner — Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award — Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror. I'll be looking for other books by this author. This book when I first heard about it immediately went up to the top of my list. If you recall, I really liked 14, and this book scratched a similar itch. It has mystery, suspense, romance, humor and was enthralling from the moment I picked it up. I’m sure you can guess where this review is going but if want to humor me and keep reading I won’t mind. :) The main character has this wonderful dry sense of humor that I found relatable and the way he would look at and comment about things around him always left me with a smile. The humor he brings provides a very good counterpoint to some of the darkness and horror. I will admit there were parts where I had to stop reading because it was getting late into the night and I got a bit scared. (Okay I admit it, I am a pansy). Lisa, the girl who has men cave stomping to be with, adds quite a bit of charm to the book and helps balances out things and sure to give Dimitri a good kick if she thinks he is being stupid. (Dimitri has a sore bum by the end of the book I can tell you that). I am one of those people who thing to truly drive a story you need more than an interesting plot, you need strong developed characters. This book has such unique characters from the overbearing Mac, who has quite the mouth on him but really is all heart, to the young niece of Lisa who is just simply amazing. Every character feels well thought out, like there is a history and baggage that help motivate them in the story. Yes, some of the characters do swear but it is never anything outside their character. I personally wasn’t bothered by the swearing but if you are someone who can’t handle it, probably shouldn’t read this (although you will be missing out). The overall plot is great, the mystery is setup very well and the pieces start to come together in a natural fashion. In the end of the story there are still many unanswered questions (second book please?) but I felt satisfied at the conclusion. If you like a good suspense, horror with wonderful characters and a great mystery you really won’t want to miss this book. Verdict: Recommended

Julie C This was a really good book. I enjoyed the storyline with it's mix of humor and haunting. Was a little disappointed with the ending. But I have to say it was definitely worth reading.
