Reviewed by Rich Follett for Readers' Favorite Poetic Potpourri by Marc Mullo is exactly the sort of halcyon potpourri that its title implies - allusions to the poet’s love for his Canadian homeland, Finnish heritage, fascination with national pastimes such as ice hockey and curling, and a personal vision of a world free from terrorism abound. The poems in this heartwarming collection are sincere, authentic, and sure to charm those readers who appreciate a nursery-rhyme meter and homespun sentiment. These are not challenging poems; rather, they are heartfelt expressions of love, loyalty, and patriotism - vital threads in the warp and weft of our shared human tapestry. Their simple messages and universal images will appeal to readers across borders and social boundaries. From “An Olympic-Sized Tribute!”: “Victories achieved and dreams fulfilled/Athletes becoming friends and spreading good will/never a dull moment with tears and extreme thrill/Canada should be and is so proud.” The feelings expressed on these pages are truly universal and sure to bring tears and smiles for readers of all ages. Not all of the poems, though, seek to communicate on a purely emotional level: there is a strong and commendable thread of social consciousness present as well. From “Global Warming”: This has become a worldwide epidemic/We are guilty of this planet getting sick/Governments are getting in on the act/All of us trying to lessen the impact.” Poetic Potpourri by Marc Mullo offers precisely the kind of sweet, earnest verse that comes across as appealing without ever being maudlin. Mullo’s poems are completely without guile or pretense and, as a result, are eminently appealing, with an easy charm not often found in modern collections.
