It is no exaggeration to say that all Western literary criticism flows from Aristotle. In the Poetics he focuses mainly on drama, especially tragedy, and introduces ideas that are still being debated more than two thousand years later. Among them is the often misunderstood theory of the unities of action, place, and time, as well as such concepts as: art as a form of imitation, and drama as an imitation of human actions; plot as a drama’s central element, and “reversal” and “recognition” as important elements within a plot; and the purging of pity and fear from the audience as the function of tragedy. The principles in what was probably a compilation of Aristotle's 'lectures notes' are timeless, and have influenced story analysis for the past 2400 years. His understanding of story as a contrived mechanism aimed to MOVE audiences should be a relief to every writer who takes it to heart: the elements required for drama and dramatic fiction and nonfiction are not infinite but a handful. But that handful must be dealt with properly or the assembly will have no effect on audiences. He tells us Homer's greatness was that 'he himself is nowhere to be found in his works, his characters everywhere' that Homer began 'in the middle of things' (Latin rhetoricians called it, 'in medias res' and that every great story needs a discovery that leads to a turning point in the protagonist's progress toward comedy or tragedy. Don't leave home without it!

Reading this book is very difficult. The footnotes disrupt the actual piece and it's hard to find the actual writings. Very poorly done. Don't waste your money on this unless you want to spend hours figuring out which words go where.

The enjoyment of reading the philosphical writings of one of the most famous philosophers of all time is hampered by the formatting of this translation. The placement of the footnotes are placed in such awkard places that they interfer with the flow of the text. The translation is serviceable, but the arrangement of the notes strikes me as perfunctory at best.
