About the Author

MAGDALENA OPALSKI is an adjunct professor at the Institute of Soviet and East European Studies at Carleton University, Ottawa. She is author of The Jewish Tavern-keeper and His Tavern in Nineteenth-Century Polish Literature (1986). ISRAEL BARTAL is Professor of Modern Jewish History at Hebrew University, Jerusalem. He is author of the forthcoming Non-Jews and Gentile Society in East European,Hebrew, and Yiddish Literature 1856-1914.
