This is a wonderful overview of all aspects of writing. The book is dense with information on techniques, examples and exercises. I find myself going back to it over and over. As an example, the Fiction chapter overviews all the main types of dialogue: direct, indirect, stylized, asynchronous with examples of each. I have both the ebook and paperback versions. The ebook is well-formatted and nice to have to take with you.

New York Writers Workshop's PORTABLE MFA IN CREATIVE WRITING is the single best book I've seen about the craft writing, and about the murky world of the MFA. If you aspire to write, the book covers the basics for beginners and it offers a challenge for more advanced writers of everything from fiction and poetry to plays and non- fiction. And if you're wondering about the value of the MFA degree, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of the pros and cons. This is an essential title.

This book offers a very good set of step-by-step instructions for just about any form of writing you can think of. The advice is practical, and the writers of each chapter are encouraging, while not soft-pedalling the hard work it takes to be a published writer. I read the entire book, even the chapters on types of writing I¿m not that interested in doing, and I discovered good advice in each of them. If you¿re looking for confirmation (or permission) that it¿s okay to work in a vacuum, just in your own head, this book won¿t provide it. As personal as writing is, it is also inherently social. If we want others to read, understand, and enjoy what we write, we must be willing to share our writing with others, and not just AFTER we submit it to a publisher. This book would be very helpful for small groups of writers to use as a blueprint for creating their own ad hoc MFA program, without all the expense and risk of ending up in a program that doesn¿t deliver what it promises.

This is an excellent resource for writers who want to work on their craft. The book is organized into five sections: Fiction, Memoir, Magazine Writing, Poetry, and Playwriting. Each section has exercises for that genre. The book is a good overview and practice for the various genres, but may not be as helpful to someone who has chosen his or her genre and is looking for a book specific to that preference.

This book was bought to be a source for a research paper. It has served that purpose well.
