Love can be the greatest possession.

Brianna Lindsay's grip on the inheritance that is rightly hers hangs by a thread. If the town finds out her father has died, Brianna will be forced into marriage with her loathsome cousin, Lord Robert, and will lose all of Edzell Castle and its lands. To protect her home, she'll have to trust a complete stranger, a brooding Highland barbarian who sweeps into Edzell with a small retinue and insists on replacing her Captain of the Guard. He proves his worth by defeating her men and she has no choice but to accept his offer.

Though his motives are suspect, Colin MacKinnon has nobility in his blood and good intentions in coming to Edzell. He seeks his own kingdom, one to rival his father's, and sets out to conquer Brianna in the best way he knows how—with seduction.

Brianna never thought of all the wealth she protects, the one thing she has left completely vulnerable is her heart. Colin never thought that of everything he stands to achieve, he might have to face the unexpected pain of loss. Together, they must navigate a treacherous world of spies and intrigue, of legacy and fidelity, of love and betrayal, to find what is truly worth possessing.

Brianna Lindsay was the lady of the castle but few knew her father the Earl was dead and that is how she planned to keep it awhile longer. Brianna had sent her Master of The Guard - Bernard to deliver a letter to Parliament but Bernard was returned to Brianna dying. Bernard was like Brianna’s father and with the Earl also dying it was if Brianna lost two fathers: one who truly loved her and her biological father. Colin had brought Bernard back to the castle. Colin also declares to his friend Alec one day the castle and it’s land would be his. Colin was a Highlander but he obviously had money. Brianna felt Highlanders could not be trusted. Colin told Brianna he feared she was in danger. Colin became Brianna’s Captain Of The Guards as her soldiers were not trained well enough to defend the castle. Brianna doesn’t want to marry her evil cousin Lord Robert. Colin hopes to marry Brianna himself and prove to his father he was a leader. Brianna wanted to to do as she wants and make her own decisions. But she also needs protection from Robert and her uncle. Colin is willing to step up and marry Brianna even if the reasoning is a little different than Brianna thinks. I enjoyed reading this story. It had a good plot. I enjoyed the characters at first I wasn’t to happy that Colin was willing to use Brianna to prove himself to his father but that changes as the story goes on. I like the ins and outs of this story and I recommend. I received an ARC of this story for an honest review.

Madeline Martin has created a story that while reading it you actually feel a part of the story. This is the story of Brianna who conceals her father's death until she can prove her legitimacy and protect her inheritance which is threatened by her uncle and vile cousin. Colin appears at Edzell Castle with the Captain of the Guards who is mortally wounded. He convinces Brianna to allow him to take over as the Captain of the Guards. Colin has hidden motives. He plans to woo Brianna and become Laird to prove to his father that he is capable of being Laird. Brianna and Colin are forced to marry after a compromising situation. Their love grows as they unite to protect the castle and the people. This is a wonderful story that will keep you entertained from beginning to end.

This is book 2 in her Highlander series. Colin MacKinnon must prove to his father that he is capable of being laird. Setting his sights on Edzell Castle, he plans to seduce the daughter of the castle. He poses as a lowly knight and gets a job as captain of the guard. Having just lost her father and the man that truly acted as her father within days of each other, Brianna Lindsay needs help keeping her inheritance from her despicable uncle and cousin. As much as she doesn't trust Colin, she needs his help. Colin needs to marry Brianna and become laird to truly show his father that he is capable. But what happens when his marriage of convenience becomes much more? This was a great story with lots of twists and turns. Brianna was a strong willed woman willing to do whatever it took to hold on to her inheritance, even if that meant to allow a stranger into her life. The attraction between Colin and Brianna was sizzling from the very beginning and kept me reading to the very end. I can't wait to read the conclusion of the trilogy which comes out in January! Thanks go out to Diversion Books via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

Brianna is trying to hide the fact that her father has died so she won’t be forced to marry her cousin. Colin Mackinnon, is a highlander looking to become lord over his own lands and plans to seduce and marry Brianna to get what he wants. This story has plenty of drama and intrigue and the chemistry between Colin and Brianna is hot. A wonderful historical romance.

This is my first book by Madeline Martin and it won't be my last. I'll be definitely putting her on my stalker list. ^_^ We meet Brianna, a young woman whose had a huge weight put on her shoulders, her father has passed away and she needs to keep it secret for a time so she's not forced to marry her vile cousin (I truly detested this cousin, he's one that'll make your skin crawl. *shivers*) Then out of nowhere a handsome highlander comes to her rescue, he claims he can protect her and her kingdom from any danger that may arise. Can she trust him? Brianna and Colin had a strong chemistry, the room just seemed to zing when they were both together. I felt their connection right off the bat, it certainly got hot in my house....quite a bit. Haha!! ^_^ Her lashes swept across her rosy cheeks. He bent over her, nuzzling her ear, and whispered in Gaelic. "Nuair a bhios sinn caenailite, chuiridh mi mo theanga far an robh mo mheoir." She stiffened beneath his fingertips. When we wed, I cannot wait to slide my tongue where my fingers have been. See???? holy mother of...........*melts to the floor* Colin is a keeper!! Yep, just got hot in here again haha! I seriously get weak in the knees for highlanders. Madeline has written a story full of suspense, passion, action, secrets & hardship. A story with wonderfully unique characters and vivid Scotland lands. I was swept away to the highlands and didn't want to come back to reality. I recommend this book to all the historical romance lovers and anyone looking for something a little different from their usual reads. ^_^

I had the opportunity to read this book prior to its release. This is the second book by Madeline Martin. I had a hard time putting this book down. Brianna is a strong woman and does whatever she needs to in order to protect her people and home. She does not want to give up her freedom as she witnessed between her own parents. That is until she falls for Colin. There are many times that she questions his honesty and his plans for her until that moment when she recognizes her love. Colin plans to marry Brianna no matter what from the beginning. He takes the time to seduce her but then things get rushed. Together they learn how to compromise and how to love fully. They both give their all for the other. I smiled and cried while reading this book and look forward to Ms. Martin's next.

Madeline Martin is a force to be reckoned with in historical highland romance! Her latest work, Possession of a Highlander, proves this with its non-stop action, subterfuge and steamy encounters. Her fine ability to infuse her stories with mystery and suspense and create interesting characters that stand out makes her a writer worth pursuing. I cannot wait to see what she has in store for her readers next! *I received this ARC via Netgalley.* *While part of a series this book can be read as a stand alone.*

In this Scottish romance, Colin MacKinnon, eldest son of his clan’s laird, is on a mission to prove to his father than he, not his minutes younger twin brother, Ian, is capable of becoming their leader. He devises a plan, with the help of his sidekick Alec MacLean, to marry Brianna Lindsay, heiress to Edzell Castle. He feels certain once he takes possession of the estate and manages it well as their laird his father will pick him as his replacement. When the unexpected opportunity to become Edzell’s Captain of the Guard presents itself, he jumps at the chance. Not only will this help him win the loyalty/trust of the people, but the hand of beautiful Briannna, as well. Little does he know of the deception Brianna recently had to orchestra to protect her people from her nefarious uncle and cousin, Robert, who is intent on marrying her. She has not only carried the burden of running the estate but the guilt of having to hide the death of her uncaring, verbally abusive, vindictive father to keep her uncle and cousin at bay. It does not take Colin long to get her to admit what happened and step in as dutiful laird and husband. Brianna, however, is not as quick to completely trust Colin. With a steady pace and several twists and turns, the story delves into getting the full picture behind Brianna’s parents’ unhappy marriage, proving her parentage, and the unfair accusations/attempts made by her relatives to hold Colin and her accountable for her father’s death, so they can take over her inheritance. The story flowed and the author juggled a large cast of secondary characters well. My only complaint is Brianna’s whining about losing her independence definitely got old. Especially since Colin played the role as a romantic, attentative, and dutiful husband verra, verra well. In fact, that is what made it so easy to forgive him for using Brianna to win his father’s favor. Overall, I enjoyed this romantic tale and think other avid Scottish romance readers will, too, especially its action-packed HEA.
