Powder Keg

Hard bop has a continually regenerating power, and exciting new players in thrall to the musical genre keep on popping up. Tenor saxophonist Ned Otter is one of the more impressive of these younger improvisers, and his third album, Powder Keg, is a fine document of his burgeoning talents. It doesn’t hurt that some first-rate supporting players, including the late, great drummer Billy Higgins and the intrepid journeyman pianist Harold Mabern, surround Otter. (The sturdy bassist Dennis Irwin and trumpeter Tom Kirkpatrick, another up-and-coming hard bopper, round out the bill). Otter continually rises to the occasion, his full-bodied playing captivating the proceedings. Otter also knows a durable jazz composition when he hears one. Nestled among the leader’s tasty originals are Wayne Shorter’s “Powder Keg,” Wes Montgomery’s “Road Song,” and Duke Pearson’s “Jeannine” -- three overlooked tunes that Otter and company breathe new life into. A recital of great promise, Powder Keg makes one look forward to round four.
