This book is organized to be "practical," especially for nonneurologists. The first division, entitled "Diagnosis," uses a problem-oriented approach, for example, approach to the patient with abnormal pupils or diplopia. This book includes relevant and practical discussions of neurological problems written by practicing clinicians and educators. These are worthy objectives, because nonneurologists frequently evaluate patients with neurologic signs and symptoms, The organization of the first 36 chapters outlines a systematic diagnostic approach to common clinical problem which affects the nervous system. The book is easy to use. It has been written to meet the neurologic needs of primary care physicians, practicing neurologists, and residents in training. It will appeal to primary care providers and residents, although some may find it too lengthy with too few illustrations. With more than 70 contributors, the individual chapters were written by neurologists qualified and experienced in their respective fields. The book is definitely underillustrated, which makes it difficult to read cover to cover. It is more suitable as a reference for a specific patient. In its current paperback form it is light and useful. This is a very broadly collected compendium of clinically useful neurologic information. The approach is very clinical and problem oriented, introducing clinically relevant information from other specialties. This collection of neurologic information is distinctly different in its approach and scope than classic neurology texts.

Description: This is a comprehensive but practical guide to the diagnosis and management of neurological disorders. It is split conveniently into two sections, diagnosis and treatment. The third edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a more concise alternative to the larger, more burdensome neurology textbooks. Its aim is to be a quick but comprehensive reference for a wide spectrum of neurological disorders. This edition serves as a real-life guide, including the ABCs of neurological emergencies.
Audience: The targeted audience includes residents, fellows, and practicing neurologists. Residents, fellows, or general neurologists early in their career would benefit most from this book, but it also would serve as a great reference for medical students interested in neurology.
Features: There are 35 chapters on presenting symptoms and fundamental information necessary for diagnosis, and guidelines for testing required to make a diagnosis. The treatment section includes 23 chapters that outline the recommended management of neurological disorders from cerebrovascular disease to neurotoxicology. Chapters use an outline format with helpful tables and examples of neuroimaging. As a bonus, there is a color chart of brain anatomy with sections on cranial nerves, the Circle of Willis, the ventricular system, and labeled fissures and gyri.
Assessment: This book accomplishes its aim of providing a concise but comprehensive neurology reference. It does not overwhelm with information, but it is appropriately detailed. It is easy to read and uniquely provides information on presenting complaints that will help readers in arriving at a diagnosis. It also summarizes and serves as a quick reference with up-to-date, optimal treatment recommendations based on diagnosis. Overall, it will be helpful for residents and serve as an essential reference for clinicians.
