A man takes his family from the big cities of Michigan with a dream to create his own little piece of land. Homesteading gave families the option of obtaining land to work and own.
The plains were barren and rough. The only trees were located at the edges of streams so the only choice was the sod. Sod houses, if built properly, were surprisingly warm and comfortable to live in. Once the family needs were taken care of the tilling of the land was required as part of the homesteading agreement.
It was hard work and only those willing to put up with the inconveniences survived.
No matter how hard life on the prairie was, Avery had no desire to return to Michigan.
