My mother read this poem to us when we were little. I read it to my children and now I am giving the book to a new mother, hopefully to be passed on to her children. I still know the words by heart and I'm 61.

I think often times we're unsure of when to introduce certain subjects to kids. Prayer is one of them. It's kind of hard to explain prayer and God to an adult, let alone a child. This book helps to introduce the subject, it also helps the child to learn how to pray for the things that matter to them. As this book was written in 1941, the pictures don't show the child with all the luxuries most kids have today. This helps in them knowing that you don't have to have much to be thankful. It also shows the child praying for other children around the world. This can help in showing children to have compassion toward others out there who might not be as fortunate. Overall, I give this book an A+, its great for children and it also remind us adults that prayer doesn't have to be some long elaborate thing, it just has to be from the heart.

Rachel Field was born in New York City in 1894. She accomplished many things in her lifetime. She won both the Caldecott and Newbery awards for two separate works. She also wrote some of the lyrics used in the Walt Disney movie Fantasia. I agree with the committee on this one. The pictures in this book are so soft and gentle they sooth you as you read. The use of soft colors and soft lines gives this book a very child friendly feel. The story is great as well it is a child praying for all her possessions. This was probably the downfall of this book however. I am sure it has been pulled from all schools because of its religious content. I found the books pictures to be very relaxing and endearing. Prayer For A Child is about a little girl who is saying her bedtime prayer at night! I would consider this book traditional because it depicts any child who is lying on their pillow, saying a prayer before they fall off to sleep. Like any child, this little girl wants to bless everybody and everything in the world such as, ¿Bless the lamplight, bless the fire.¿ My favorite picture in the book is when the girl prays, ¿Bless other children, far and near And keep them safe and free from fear.¿ The picture is very colorful and would appeal to any child¿s eye. Rachel Field wrote Prayer For A Child and many other children and adult books. She was the first woman to win the Newberry Medal. She was taken suddenly and died in her forties. Field, Rachel. I use it to teach Sunday school. It's difficult otherwise to think of prayers appropriate for very little children.

Caldecott Book Title: Prayer for a Child Reading Level: First Grade Genre: Poetry About the Author: Rachel Field wrote this prayer for her own daughter, but she now shares it with children all over the world. Her beloved children¿s books include Newbery Medal winner Hitty, Her First Hundred Years, Caldico Bush and Hapatica Hawks. Book Review: A Prayer for a Child is a kind reminder of God¿s protection. Although a Prayer for a Child was written for one little special girl, it has now become a prayer for boys and girls all over the world. It is full of intimate gentleness for familiar things, and the love for friends and family. ¿Bless my friends and family.¿ ¿Bless my Father and my Mother And keep us close to one another.¿ This is a story that children and parents will love, as it brings to our hearts a reminder of the responsibility of preserving for all times, the faith and hopes of little children. This is a delightful book, beautifully illustrated, and I would recommend this book for all children. Bibliographic Information: Field, Rachel. Prayer for a Child. This is a wonderful easy to read book for any child to read. It's simple, and has a nice, sweet message to go along with it. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with small children to read to at night!
