CHAPTER 1

INtheTRENCHES

A PRAYERfor theRELUCTANT WARRIOR

We are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 6:12

* * *

Have you noticed that we tend to live in a state of reactive Christianity? When we're not experiencing some crisis in our lives, it's easy to forget about the war that Paul is warning us about in Ephesians 6. When we're feeling safe and comfortable, we can quickly forget that the war is still raging around us.

There was a time in my life when I paid little attention to the spiritual side of mothering, choosing instead to focus my energy on meeting the physical demands of our family. I lived a comfortable Christianity, like most of my friends from church. Not too hot, not too cold — just right for the culture. My motto was "Live and let live." I didn't understand all this talk of a "war" that I kept hearing about in Sunday school. Surely that was overdone, right? Surely it wasn't that big of a deal.

For years I read my obligatory daily devotions, checking off this task on my to-do list like "laundry" and "vacuuming." I made sure the children went to church and stayed away from anything obviously wrong, like voodoo or Ouija boards, and I felt basically secure in my culturally correct Christianity. I didn't take the Bible's repeated warnings about the need to be spiritually prepared too seriously. I didn't want to see the battle, much less engage in it.

Today most of us Christians don't get onto the battlefield until the war gets out of control and someone calls for reinforcements. We are startled to attention when there's a school shooting or a national tragedy. When that happens, we hurry up and get our prayer on, showing up to candlelight vigils and praying fervently around our dinner tables. But when the crisis dies down, we hang up our helmets and go back to the status quo.

It's easy to put off confronting the enemy until we feel we have no choice, but our kids need us to engage consistently, with the holy intention of doing battle in the heavenly realms.

Don't wait for a crisis to get onto the battlefield, precious mom! A pattern of "crisis equals prayer" puts us on the defensive and leaves us unprepared for battle. It's time. Time to get off the bench and onto the battlefield. Let's go on the spiritual offense for the sake of our children. If God is for us, who can be against us?

* * *

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL, LORD — but I suppose You already know that.

I never imagined it could be this intense ... I must not have been really listening when I learned it would be. Somehow I never imagined I'd find myself in a spiritual battle — at least not one with stakes as high as these. I never imagined that my own children would be in the battle. If I'm being honest, I don't want to fight. I don't want to be part of this battle at all.

Sometimes I can fool myself into thinking there isn't a fight raging around me. Would You open the eyes of my heart so I can discern truth from fiction in this crazy, upside-down world? Would You help me teach my children that because the enemy of their souls is real, the war is real too? Would You help me be an example to those who look to me for guidance and protection? Help me to show them that You are the true source of guidance and protection.

I'm lazy sometimes, God ... but I know You already know that. Please help me not to come to You only when the fighting is fierce. I want to be prepared for battle, but I confess that sometimes I struggle to put on my helmet and engage with the world around me.

Lord, I need Your wisdom and courage to stay in the fight. It's tempting to sit on the sidelines — it feels safer. Don't let me live to be safe! Instead, help me live to bring glory and honor to You.

Show me what I need to do to engage in the battle and not grow weary. Give me Your wisdom as my children struggle to discern who the real enemy is — and help all of us to stay true to You and Your Word. Lord, would You protect my heart from thinking my role in the battle isn't that important? Would You protect me from being complacent in my faith? Would You remind me that You are by my side?

I don't want to grow weary in doing good; I long for renewed vision to fight for what's at stake. Give me Your heart so that I will stay in the battle until the day You call me home.

Thank You for the privilege of being Your child and for fighting on my behalf. Thank You for opening my eyes to the very real battle for the heart and soul of a generation that needs You ... starting with my own children. For their sake, I am answering Your call to engage in the battle. I'm reporting for duty, Sir!

Onto the battlefield!

A PRAYERfor theMOM WHO FEELS BURDENED

If God is for us, who can ever be against us?

Romans 8:31

* * *

If we are going to be victorious in the battle between good and evil, we need to know our adversary. Satan's name reveals much about his character. The title Satan is used fifty-two times in the Bible. It literally means "the adversary" or "the one who opposes." He is also called the devil, a word that is used more than thirty times in the Bible and means "slanderer" or "accuser." Regardless of what name he is called, the point is clear: we have a real enemy who wants to take us down.

Satan is a lot of things, but he isn't stupid. The Bible teaches that he operates according to a plan or a scheme (see 2 Corinthians 2:10-11 and Ephesians 6:11). He sets traps for God's people, and he will try to test us (see Luke 22:31-32). He knows our weaknesses and sends specific temptations to derail us from our Kingdom purpose. His mission is to lie to, accuse, and oppose God's people. He's quite a formidable enemy.

Satan is as stealthy today as he was in the Garden of Eden. His efforts to twist what God calls evil into good are being embraced everywhere we turn — even in the church. Sadly, we often don't notice the lies until they are deeply embedded in the fabric of our churches and families. Peter warns that there will be many false teachers in the world — and he's right (see 2 Peter 2:1).

Over the course of twenty-five years in public ministry — as well as in our personal lives — my husband, Jay, and I have often sensed the presence of the enemy. Sometimes his attacks are obvious, and other times they come in subtle ways. The enemy may try to drag us down through a heaviness of spirit — a feeling of oppression that we can't shake. Or his attack may come through a series of trials that cause us to focus on our struggles instead of on the tender voice of God.

Why is this helpful to know? Because when we know the tactics of our enemy, we can be on the lookout for him. The next time you find yourself in a situation that causes you to behave in a way that doesn't please God, stop and ask God for wisdom. Is it possible that your adversary is actively opposing you? Are you being tempted? If so, put on the armor of God (see Ephesians 6:10-20)! Victory is ultimately assured to every believer when we walk in a manner that pleases God.

Our children need to see that we trust in the power and plan of our Creator. Rather than react to the schemes of the devil in fear and timidity, we can get on our knees and expect the Lord of heaven's armies to come to our defense.

The way we respond to the devil says a lot about our faith in God. Our children are watching us. Even grown children watch to see how their parents respond to difficult times. Will we act in fear or faith?

Every day — we get to choose.

* * *

LORD, I CONFESS that sometimes I don't see the devil. I am such a sucker.

I forget that I have an adversary. I don't always recognize my enemy. Forgive me for not being more vigilant, for not keeping watch as You asked me to.

When difficult things happen, I am not prone to prayer. I am prone to worry. I sometimes forget that You are God and You are bigger than any adversary I will ever face. Thank You that Your Word says the devil will not prevail; he will be cast into the lake of fire. The enemy will not get the last word!

Help me to show my children what it looks like to be on guard against the accuser. Help me to come to You as soon as I realize I am falling for a scheme of the devil. Father, help me be the woman, the mother, You call me to be — a woman who stands strong against evil and temptation.

Lord, protect my children from the schemes of the devil too. Protect their hearts, their eyes, and their desires. Father, Your Word tells us that there are many false teachers in the world today, and I know that the only way we will be able to recognize them is to hold them up against Scripture. Remind us to be in your Word every day. Let it be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.

And one more thing, Lord. I realize that I am prone to wander from Your truth and Your teaching even when the devil isn't prodding me. I confess that I often sin not because I don't know better but because my flesh is weak. Help me to listen for Your still, small voice, and strengthen me by Your Spirit.

Heidi's "handbook for battle" is a collection of Scripture-soaked prayers alongside biblical teaching and personal testimony, serving to remind us of who we are as daughters of the King of Heaven's Armies and to call us to action: get off the bench and onto the battlefield. You will be both challenged and encouraged, finding yourself nodding in agreement as you are stirred to stand up and fight for your family and your faith. Each prayer beautifully echoes the heart's cry of a mother seeking to serve the Lord in her family and with the legacy they will leave for generations to come. Relate-able would be an understatement for this book! It will not be one sitting alongside others I've already read, collecting dust on a shelf; it will be one I carry with me and draw encouragement from often. I cannot possibly recommend it enough!

I've read every book Heidi St. John has ever written, and in my opinion, they just keep getting better and better. She has such a gift for encouragement, something she doles out generously in PRAYERS FOR THE BATTLEFIELD to mothers in the trenches. I love the fact that Heidi's prayers are all drenched in Scripture. You can be certain you are praying with the heart of God when you stand firmly on His Word to do it. PRAYERS FOR THE BATTLEFIELD is a much needed resource -- and prayer a too-oft neglected privilege -- for mothers with children of all ages and stages, from tiny newborn to full grown adult.

Prayers for the Battlefield by Heidi St. John is a book you want in your collection of resources. From angels to worry and everything in between, Heidi will teach you how to put on your armor and get in the spiritual battle through intentional prayer. Her authentic stories continue to make you feel like you're sitting down with a friend over a cup of coffee to talk about life and just be real. Those stories combined with her use of scripture in prayer teach you how to be just that real with God. Let's face it - it's easy to let ourselves get sidelined in the battle as the busy-ness of life jumps to the forefront and our Bibles and prayer life begin to gather dust. Not only does Prayers for the Battlefield remind us of how important it is to stay in the fight and in the Word, it teaches us how to do it and come out stronger and more faithful on the other side. It's time for all of us to get off the bench.

This book is a source of encouragement on so many levels. Heidi hits on topics that we all struggle with and face or will or could at some point and gives an arsenal of scriptural resources to pray through and reflect on. She shares her own stories, prays with us, and offers scriptural application. I’ve read and re-read several sections of the book already, depending on what’s going on in my life, and I’ve shared from it with friends in need. This is such a wonderful resource for every woman to have on her bedstand! It’s also a great gift idea.

This little book is a treasure for Christian Moms. Each brief chapter addresses a different type of prayer that would be helpful in different situations. When I read through the list of chapter titles, I thought, "Yep, that's me!". I've been the Weary Mom, the Brokenhearted Mom, the Mom that needs Supernatural Help and so many more. The prayers Heidi has written give words to the thoughts of my heart. Reading her words reminds me that we are in a spiritual battle. There is much as stake and Moms have a front row position in the lives of our families. The book gives practical examples of how to pray scripture in different seasons of life and stages of raising children that honor the Lord. This beautiful book would make a great gift for the mothers. I highly recommend this book! You should also check out her podcast The Busy Mom for more encouragement :)

Heidi St. John did it again. Momma, if you’re looking for a book that is encouraging, biblically rooted, and powerful, look no further. Heidi knows motherhood. She knows the struggles we face. She knows the pressure of the culture. She knows the emotions we struggle with. And this book? It gets us off our tear stained, worry-wart pillows and on our knees. With this book you will be inspired and equipped to no longer sit on the sidelines of your motherhood in this world, but instead arm yourself with the armor of God and prayerfully prevent and dispel the attacks of the enemy. This book is so powerful and fully rooted in scripture. There is no fluff at all. Every page had me gripped and in awe of the power of God and truth in His Words so eloquently portrayed by Heidi. If you’re ready to get off the bench and fight for your family in prayer, this book is for you. On top of all the outstanding contents within it’s pages, the book itself is a thing of pure beauty. It’s beautiful cover and hardbound nature with gold embellishments throughout will make a perfect gift for the other prayer warrior mommas in your life. I know many mommas in my life will be getting copies! This is a book you will never regret purchasing and will be an amazing tool alongside your Bible to fight the good fight! I was given and ARC copy of this book for my honest review. And this review is full of gushing love and honesty. This book has blessed my life and will yours as well! Thank you Heidi for your courage and transparency in this journey of motherhood God’s way!

Heidi St. John is the real deal. She is down to earth, relatable, but most importantly, loves Jesus Christ with her whole heart. This book is an extension of that, and you can see God’s hand in everything she has written. Through short chapters, she touches on every circumstance and situation that a mom (or any age!) may be currently facing. But most importantly, through these short chapters, she brings you back to what needs to be our anchor - God’s Word. The prayers at the end of each chapter are full of scripture, and is an encouragement regardless of where you are at in your walk with Jesus. If you are a new/newer believer, this will teach you how to pray. If you’re a seasoned believer, it will strengthen you, refresh you, and give you encouragement in your prayer life. This is a book that you don’t want to miss out on!

Heidi St. John communicates God's Truth through her gracious and transparent words! She encourages us to get off the bench and on the battlefield, equipping us with God's Word and the foundation of Jesus. Prayers for the Battlefield reminds us that we have an adversary, but that God equips us in this fight. Beginning with Scripture and ending each chapter with praying the Scriptures, this book is sure to help us staying "momstrong!"

A blessing and a must have book for every mom This book looks beautiful on the outside and is even better on the inside! This is a wonderful devotional book for moms to encourage us, inspire us, support us and prepare us and our kids for living in our current culture. The devotions are by topic so you can open up and flip right to whatever will build you up for that day. For example there are prayers for the mom who feels overwhelmed, who feels powerless, who wants her child to stay on the path, who needs self-control, and for the worried mom, to name just a few. Each devotion ends with a prayer that prays scripture over ourselves, our families, and our kids. As a bonus, after the prayer there are scripture references which I like to look up so I can see where the verses come from that were used in the prayer. This book has really been a blessing in my life and I’m sure it will bless yours too.

I appreciate how vulnerable and real Heidi is in her own trials and triumphs. It makes for a beautiful read and resource during your own struggles as a parent/mom. There is a topical index in the back where you can look up issues and struggles you are facing so that you can learn how to pray scripture over it. Many times have I gone back to the same topic just to remind myself of this spiritual battle I am on and to dive once again into prayer over a situation. I think this is also a great resource for busy moms as each section is jam packed with great conviction and encouragement but it is also bit size and short and brings you right to some specific scripture references and a prayer example to use to pray over your situation. Don't miss out on this book.

I LOVE this prayer/devotional book. I really like how it is organized into different prayer sections. Along with my Bible, it has been my go to book for prayer. It has made a BIG difference in my prayer life and has helped me to walk through some difficulties in my family. Heidi St. John has reminded me through this book that the "The battle belongs to the Lord" and the importance of reading and praying the Word of God. I have meet Heidi and heard her speak several times and she is the real deal. She loves the Lord and has a calling to proclaim Scripture and point people back to the Word of God.. MomStrong and Prayers for the Battlefield are among my all-time favorite books.

This is a must read book for all moms! It helps us know how to pray, whether it is over a prodigal child, for the teacher/child relationship, or most any other battle that we might face as moms. There were times it touched close to my heart and times it inspired me to rise higher than ever before. I know this will be a book that I will re-read many times over.

Once again, Heidi has written a book that speaks straight to the heart of moms in the midst of raising their children to be lovers of Christ in a world that fights against them at every step. Her book is filled with prayers for moms in every season of life, including specific verses that mom can use to pray the scripture. I am so thankful for this book—and I love that I can toss it in my bag and use it throughout the day for encouragement or guidance in situations that might arise. Thank you, Heidi, for writing the book!

As a prayer warrior, I have read countless books, by many Christian authors, on the subject of prayer. All were awesome, but none have touched me in such a personal and profound way as Heidi's book has. This book is different in that it teaches us how to pray the scriptures for whatever season of life we are in as mothers. I especially appreciate the fact that the prayers are geared toward, not only what season moms are in, but cover whatever difficulties she may be going through at that particular moment. Wisdom and prayers can be found for the overwhelmed mom, the mom who needs courage, the mom facing an unplanned pregnancy, the brokenhearted mom of a prodigal, and the mom who needs supernatural help- just to name a few. Heidi provides wisdom and encouragement from the Scriptures along with “weaponry” that we warrior moms so vitally need on this battlefield we call life. Heidi also so beautifully shares personal reflections from her heart about her life that had me crying from chapter to chapter. Her transparency is something to be admired and appreciated. Her devotion to God, her family, and to the moms of the world are so very evident throughout the pages of this book and you can feel that passion as well as her sense of urgency for we moms to "get off the bench" and on to the battlefield!

Love, Love, Love! A reference guide on prayer that every mom in every season needs! Heidi encourages you to see that we are in a battle for the hearts and minds of our children and future generations. This culture and the world we live in is fighting to pull them away from truth and the Lord. We need to get off the bench and into the battle for them. We need to be in the Word daily and praying daily! How can we give them what we don’t have? Each section addresses a different topic that we all have or will struggle with (like: To the mom who is afraid, worried, wants to be a good example etc.) Heidi shares a verse and then a personal story or biblical explanation to go along with each topic. At the end there is a beautifully written prayer that incorporates lots of scripture. There are also more scripture references so you can dig deeper! I loved the prayers! They were great for a tired mama of 4 kiddos under 6 who struggles to find the words and scriptures to pray. I love that I can pick up the book, look up the topic I’m struggling with and find verses, encouragement and prayer in a couple of quick pages. You can see Heidi’s heart and desire to equip moms to raise a Godly generation of children on these pages. Heidi’s words made me want to dive into scripture and prayer and ready myself to fight for my faith and my family!

Do you need help praying for your family? Heidi has put together powerful prayers to help. In her new book, Prayers for the Battlefield she challenges us to get #offthebench. Our families need strong and fearless praying moms to counter the cultural norm, the status quo, the Anti Christ movement that our families face everyday. I love Heidi's writing. It is simple to the point and filled with honest love for a lost world, family and for this generation. You will find yourself in this collection of prayers and reflections to help you stay in the battle. Being a wife and mother are two of the greatest things in my life. This book will help you stay the course in prayer, whether you are a new mom or a grandma and everything in between. Heidi is committed to help us stay MomStrong with the Spirit filled prayers with scripture. The only way to pray in my humble opinion. Prayers for the Battlefield is for every season of motherhood. As long as we have breath we have influence in our children's lives. Let's put on our armor and engage the enemy in the battle for future generations. Rise up women of God, the King of heavens army has our backs. He will never leave us or forsake us. What legacy do you want to leave? Spirit filled scripture led prayer is a super natural. Jesus says in John 14:12-14 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. Finally, be encouraged sisters, we can dance on the battlefield even in the trials of life because the victory is already won and belongs to the Lord. I highly recommend this book and it will be living on my side table or bedside. It makes a great gift and also great for a time of sharing with other ladies. Imagine praying these prayers in a group? #offthebench

Every woman needs this book! Beautiful words of encouragement, the Word of God and a heartfelt prayer make a quick read when you need to be encouraged or need to encourage someone else. It’s a handbook for the battlefield! Feeling overwhelmed? There is a prayer for that! Need wisdom? Yes! That is covered! Worried? Broken-hearted? It doesn’t take long to find the chapter that you need for the battle you are facing. I love how short yet so full each devotion is. Even if you don’t enjoy reading, this book is for you!

Heidi has done it again! I had the honor and privilege of being on the launch team for Prayers for the battlefield and I can't say enough about how much this book will change your life. Heidi has the rare God given gift of being able to take you through every day life storms and point you straight to God Breathed Scripture each and every time. From the smallest storm to the hardest, drop you to your knees catastrophe, Prayers for the Battlefield walks you through praying straight from the scriptures to battle those storms and feel God's presence. Heidi has the gift of making you laugh and cry all in the same sentence. Her knowledge of today's culture and how we need to prepare our families for those wars we find ourselves in now and will in the future is for me, of the UTMOST importance. She gives us tools to speak boldly about the Battle we are in and sends us back to Scripture each and every time for the TRUTH and armor we need. I can't recommend this book enough for every stage of life.

I love this book! I am a mom of 3 girls ages, 31, 25 and 20 and was part of the launch team. I wish that I had this book as my girls were growing up but it still helps as they are older. It is for every stage of motherhood. Heidi touches on all aspects and stages of motherhood with encouragement and guidance. Each chapter ends with a prayer to guide you to ask God for his plan for each stage of raising his kids! Heidi reminds all through the book why we do what we do as mothers. It is definitely a book that I will reread and give to my girls as they have children of their own. We need to raise each generation to love and follow the Lord, especially with the immorality of the times we live in. I encourage everyone to read this book!.

Equipping my mind and soul for the battle! This book is a timely tool for women who are burdened with the demands of life. This book is categorized into areas that are constant struggles for moms and women. Prayers for the Battlefield is a much needed book for all moms! This is a book that you would keep on your table, to have those prayers ready when needed. It's a much needed resource. In her book, Heidi St. John shares encouragement for mom through stories, prayers, and follows up with scripture. I like that this is a book where prayers are written out for moms that are in each season of life.

Timely, relevant, poignant, truth-filled, encouraging - this book is a must-have for every mom, aunt, and grandma who deeply desires to do things God’s way. Heidi’s book pivots our stance toward God, and girds us up with His truth so we can engage our culture and our everyday life in a strategic and intentional way! This book is set up to be used in two different ways: 1. You could use it as a daily meditation or devotional. There are 31 beautifully written meditations and prayers, so you could easily read one a day for a month, and then repeat (like I sometimes do with the Proverbs). 2. OR you can use it as a handy reference book for the exact area the enemy is attacking. For example, this morning I was feeling especially worn down by the hecticness of life, so I referenced the chapter entitled Pray, Prioritize, Proceed - A Prayer for the Mom Who is Weary. The thing I love most about this book is that each chapter ends in a prayer that is completely based in multiple verses of scripture. Heidi takes God’s Word, and beautifully crafts an authentic, heartfelt prayer for each chapter. I can’t recommend this book highly enough! Heidi, thank you for continuing to write books that point us back to Jesus and the truth of God’s Word!
