Preacher's Massacre by William W. Johnstone

It's Springtime in Wyoming. Preacher is on the move, joining a trail drive led by freewheeling adventurer Wiley Courtland. Wiley has good horses to deliver to the American Fur Company at Fort Gifford. An Indian war party, led by the cunning and ruthless Red Knife, has other plans.

Furiously fighting their way to safety, the horse traders make it to Fort Gifford, where the beautiful wife of the fort's commander makes a raid of her own, with the help of Preacher's newfound buddy Wiley. While jealousy erupts, Red Knife and his bloodthirsty legion of warriors come galloping over the horizon—and lay siege to the fort. Before help can come, an act of treachery opens the gates to a massacre. . .

Only one man survives the carnage. From the smoke and blood, he emerges, clinging to his life and loaded for bear. On his own—the way he likes it—Preacher begins his war of revenge. . .

I did purchase this book and did enjoy it... however, I was NOT happy with the circumstances that caused me to buy it. I have 3 Nooks and influenced my brother and sister-in-law to each purchase Nooks. He lent me this book and it did not come thru... went to the local B&N store and they completely had things confused and they finally DELETED the book beint lent so I had to purchase the book. Was not happy with the advice received when the personnel person had to call for info and got incorrect info TWICE and messed things up. Am pretty disappointed with the B&N service but not the book.

The first Mountain Man always delivers!! This time Preacher is pressed into service with a businessman trying to ferry a herd of horses to an obscure outpost against what seems to be the whole Blackfoot Nation. Lots of action dominates the entire book with many twists and turns to keep it intriguing, including a stunning betrayal. Through it all, there are lots of insights into the workings of the Native American’s mind at that time in history and the madness of obsession when it takes hold of someone. You can never go wrong with Preacher, Horse, and Dog. LOL.
