'Trapped in a Whirlwind' brings to life the ordeal faced by one of our lesser-known presidents in the momentous year before the Civil War. Few people today realize that President Buchanan tried to avoid the war through a compromise between the northern abolitionists and southerners. Buchanan felt that the southern states would eventually end slavery if left alone to handle their own problems. His many warnings against a possible civil war were ignored by the firebrand abolitionists who refused all compromise offers. The romance of Harriet Lane, Buchanan's 'first lady,' is woven into the background of an intriguing tale that entertains and enlightens at the same time. I highly recommend this book to people interested in the history of the Civil War era.
