About the Author

A writer since 5th grade, Ann Staley was "encouraged" by her teachers, elementary through graduate school. These teachers noticed Ann's way with words and let her know they saw something special. When she realized that doing a PhD thesis at Stanford would "mess with her prose and poetry" she abandoned the program before taking the Orals that are part of every post-graduate degree. Back home in Oregon, she found more inspiration in the natural world and kept on teaching until she retired. She used writing in all the classes she taught - from American Indian Literature right through to Ecology and Writing. Her students wrote every day in class, kept observational journals, and notebooks on experiments. Ann did all the work she assigned, reminding her students that they could earn an "A" if they worked as diligently as she did. More information at
