About the Author

Daphne Award-winning author and former Tennessee native Tes Hilaire doesn't remember how old she was when she wrote her first story, but she's pretty sure it had something to do with a boy and a girl and a happily every after. Displaced at an early age to "the north country," her stories turned darker as she started creating whole new worlds to escape the harsh, upstate NY winters. Now back in the South, her stories remain edgy, exciting, and bring a hint of dark fantasy to paranormal romance. Best of all, no one ever has to shovel snow. For more, visit her website at

Four months before...

Valin fought to breathe through the layers of dust shifting through the stale air of the cave. One aftershock tremor after another rumbled through the cavern.

He blinked, striving to make out anything in the darkness. Nothing could have possibly survived that blast. Even Valin's skin felt singed, and as a Paladin he was supposedly immune from the burn of heavenly light. Unlike the vamps and demons they'd been battling in this godforsaken place.

He shuddered, dread settling in his core. Gritting his teeth, he pushed out with his senses, striving for any signs of a living, breathing essence. Nothing. Absolutely fucking nothing.

Because you're too late. Just like you were with Angeline. Too late to protect her. Too late to save your unborn child. And now your little vampire is dead too.

He clenched his jaw. He would not believe Gabriella was dead. She might have been a vampire, but she was his vampire.

"Fuck." He raked his hands down over his face. "What the hell am I thinking?" He'd just met the pint-sized pain in the ass. He knew nothing about her other than that she was stubborn, annoying, and...brave. So fucking brave. Brave enough to face down him, her natural enemy, while chained to a wall. Brave enough to stand against her master. Brave enough to run toward death in some vain hope that she might save the lives of two others. Stupid, impossible brat.

Swearing, he pushed off the clammy wall, stumbling along, randomly picking tunnels whenever he came to a split. Maybe she made it far enough. She was fast and determined. Maybe...

His boot kicked into something soft, causing a pile of ash to billow up around him, clogging his lungs.

He ground to a halt, breath trapped tight behind his ribs as he sifted his hand through the cloud of ash. So soft, so light, and all that was left of a life. His hand began to shake, pain radiating from behind his ribs, even though he knew, knew it could just as likely be some random bloodsucker who'd decided to take their chances in these caves rather than facing the Paladin who'd come to eradicate them.

This wasn't her. He'd prove it. He clenched his hand into a fist, taking another step into the darkness. He just had to find her first.

This is by far, my favorite book of the series.  I have always loved Gabriella and was really unsure how Tes was going to pull this off without the creepy factor (she was turned pretty young even though she is super old).  Have no fears, at no point was there any creepoid factor and I actually loved Gabriella even more then before this book by the time I was a few chapters in.  Add Valin, the super hot and slightly dark Paladin and the pages sizzled with chemistry as the two come together to fight on the side of "good".  This book is part of a series and while you could read this as a stand alone, I think you would feel like you were missing out on some history as well as some of the emotional undercurrents that ran throughout the book.  If you are a fan of this series, you really should snag this one now.  I admit it, I am already waiting for the next book because I want more Paladin awesomeness asap.

Valin is a Paladin Warrior who remains on the fringes of the brotherhood. His powers are shadows which puts him in the dark more than the light of his fellow warriors. He discovered his mate, but lost her in an explosion of light. Once he finds her he plans on never letting her go again.  Gabriella was made into a vampire against her will, now she fights with ½ breeds against the forces of evil. Doing everything she can to keep from turning evil, Gabriella duels with her nature ever day When the sexy Valin offers her a chance to drink from his vein, its more than she can bear.  Valin plays the hold no bars he-man and is constantly chasing after Gabriella to rectify his mis-steps in wooing.  Gabriella is battling the darkness physically as well as mentally and vacillates between accepting the affections of Valin and running for the hills. Paladin eradicates her kind, why would Valin want her? How can they ever be happy with the dark constantly pulling her toward evil? Prince of Shadows was a fast paced, action filled story with an electrifying attraction and a pretty great romance. Prince of Shadows is a fantastic story to take you away to this wonderful paranormal world of the Paladin Warriors. Definitely a book to check and a series to follow! Valin and Gabby's story was definitely one of my favorites. I have read the other two books in the series, and really enjoyed them as well, but this one kind of surprised me. There was an intense darkness in this book, which I expected. However, I expected it to be focused on Valin, so I found it very intriguing. While he does have his issues, Gabby seemed to be the one really struggling in this book. She is dealing with almost the exact opposite issues as Valin, but the two just work perfectly together. I loved their chemistry, and how their stories come together and overlap. I thought Valin would be the one running from a relationship and trying to keep to his private life, but he was actually very forward and open, and I loved seeing him that way. Even though he seemed different, that rough Valin-like edge was still intact. He knew what he wanted, and went for it. Paladin rules be damned! I love his sarcasm and attitude!  Poor Gabby! While Valin's main issue is his past, Gabby's main concern is her future. She is trying to stay within the lonely shadows of her life, while Valin is trying to pull her out of them. Gabby's character development in this book was amazing! It went to depths I didn't even imagine for her. She can finally walk in the light, but there is a darkness consuming her. There were so many surprises in this book. I think I held my breath through the entire ending, especially the battle. Holy cliffhangers! I can't wait to find out about Annie and the knives! Bennett managed to slip under my radar until now. I want to know more about him too! I was a little confused about Logan, but a quick glance at book #2 cleared that right up. Once again Tes Hilaire has done a magnificent job!

The characters waste too much time talking, and not enough time fighting/reacting. Don't waste your time trying to read it.
