Overview

The Princess by Claire Delacroix

Princess Brianna of Tullymullagh is determined to marry only for love—until her father’s holding is conquered and the king decrees that she must wed one of the victor’s sons. Thinking she can outwit this condition, Brianna issues a challenge: the son who brings her a gift that makes her laugh will win her hand.

Thus begins the Bride Quest of the three brothers Fitzgavin.

Burke and Rowan, knights both, ride out on Brianna’s quest, each intent upon triumph. Only Luc refuses to participate, for he knows that a princess had no place in the life of a battle-weary warrior like himself. Brianna is not inclined to accept his refusal—she tempts him and awakens his slumbering senses with her alluring beauty and her sweet kisses. Luc has sworn to lay down his sword forever—until he is the sole one who can defend the fair maiden who has claimed his shielded heart.

About the Author

A confessed romantic dreamer, Claire Delacroix always wove stories in her mind.  While working as a technical writer for a software company, she began to look for a book to lose herself in for a few hours in the evening.  When she couldn't find the right mix of elements, she decided to write that book herself and unwittingly started upon a new career.

Claire makes her home in Toronto, Canada, with her husband, far too many books, and a variety of undisciplined houseplants.  She is an avid needleworker and often sorts out plot tangles while knitting intarsia sweaters.  Claire travels as much as possible, rides her bicycle everywhere, and cooks with enthusiasm—as long as someone else washes the dishes!

Watch for the next two novels in the stunningly romantic Bride Quest trilogy—The Damsel and The Heiress, coming soon from Dell.

I read this book as part of a collection some time ago and was happy to see it released as a standalone. Determined only to marry for love, Princess Brianna sets up what she thinks will be an impossible task for her prospective suitors… the first one who makes her laugh loudest and longest wins her hand. The eldest son, Luc Fiztgavin, does not want to participate at all, and so stays behind while his brothers set off on the quest. He busies himself tending a long abandoned orchard, which, unbeknownst to him, was a favorite of Brianna’s mother, and also dear to her heart. Their reluctant, but undeniable attraction, keeps pulling them together. As always, Ms. Delacroix draws you into the story with beautiful descriptive prose, dialog which feels perfectly natural and native to the time period, and a heartwarming and lovely HEA. A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
