PreS-Gr 2

Pink-clad Priscilla's name is splashed across the cover in huge red glitter letters, and the kitschy cartoon artwork continues the red and pink overkill as the girl and her best friend head to the North Pole to meet Santa. Topknots and bows decorate the heads of these Kewpie dollish, always-fashionable little girls. They plan their trip, taking along their lapdog, tea set, and other necessities as they ski cross county due north. They meet some interesting creatures and endure a class-seven squall, but return home without a Santa sighting. The ever-effervescent duo seems satisfied with the hint of a reindeer-drawn sleigh in the background of one of the photos, but readers who have slogged through this journey described in singsong rhyme will be sorely disappointed.-Lisa Falk, Los Angeles Public Library

Kirkus Reviews
The Hobbie brother-and-sister team brings back Priscilla, their perky, pink-clad protagonist, for a fourth rhyming adventure, focused this time on finding Santa at the North Pole. Priscilla and her BFF, Bettina, take off on skis to try to find Santa Claus and meet some interesting characters along the way. They do reach the North Pole (cleverly marked with a gigantic pink striped pole) but a snowstorm forces them back home without meeting Santa. While examining a photo from the trip, the girls realize that Santa was actually in midflight behind them, and they just missed seeing him. This ending falls flat, with the buoyant fantasy aspects of their trip out of sync with the realism of the missed opportunity. If you can make it to the North Pole on skis pulling a sled of supplies, then you should be able to find Santa too. The whimsical illustrations awash in pinks and reds are amusing, and the rhyming verses are entertaining, but the ending leaves the reader feeling like a kid with just a lump of coal in a pretty pink stocking. Reviewed by Kristie I. for Readers Favorite The audio book version of “Priscilla and the Great Santa Search,” written by Nathaniel Hobbie and illustrated by Jocelyn Hobbie, is sure to become a treasured Christmas tradition in your family! After seeing so many Santa Clauses all around as Christmas is approaching, Priscilla and her friend Bettina create a plan to go to the North Pole to find the real Santa Claus as they realize that the ones they see are fake. After having a sleepover and finalizing their plan, the girls set out dressed for the wintry weather and strapped on their skis to go to the North Pole. Along the way they see many sights and encounter a storm too; however, they take pictures and enjoy cookies and hot cocoa. While the storm derails their plans, they see something in one of their pictures that gives them hope and joy for Christmas. Written in rhyme, the story is catchy and full of fun words and sentences that children and adults will enjoy reading. The words and imagery allow for vivid pictures to be imagined throughout while we listen to the story. This would be great to share with children either before going out shopping or doing “Christmasy” activities or afterwards as there are always questions about seeing so many Santa Clauses and being unable to tell which are real or fake. Priscilla and Bettina are lovable characters who are full of life and fun and children will enjoy spending time with them while listening to this story.
