With the blessing of Madonna, the 39-year-old French producer Mirwais, who produced the Material Mom's 2000 blockbuster, Music, launches his Production on two tough crowds. The first crowd, Madonna fans, will find only their idol's (French) vocal on "Paradise (Not for Me)" to grab on to -- the darker sonics of Production are not exactly engineered to make the people come together. The second crowd, dance music fans already surfeited by French disco pop from Air, Daft Punk, Modjo, Dimitri from Paris, et al, are more likely to be persuaded by Mirwais's by now very French swirl of abrasive analog synths, vocoders, and '70s disco bass lines. The single "Disco Science," which kicks off the album on a deceptively up-tempo note, grooves and snarls around a Breeders sample; it's chased by a vocoder-rich "Naïve Song," whose girl-happy/boy-happy song imagery is the last ray of light on a progressively darker album. The minimalist "Definitive Beat" and "Junkie's Prayer" feature enough cutting and mixing to qualify for the DMC championships, and the glacial "Paradise (Not for Me)" proves that Mirwais is more interested in dance music's electronic aesthetics than in actually moving bodies. Complementing the above-mentioned bands, Production's coolly indifferent brand of deca-dance is only rivaled by Air in elevating Gallic disco to the realms of art music.
