How do superheroes (called 'super humans') save the world if people don't think it needs saving? Set in 2021 on a rebuilding Earth where heroes are persona non grata, the novel starts as a coming of age for Zenia Sinclair, a twenty-year-old who can teleport herself. As her worldview grows outside the 'rehabilitation camp' she escaped from, Zenia learns about the Superstars, the main superhero team of years ago and encounters some of their veterans (and their adversaries) on their quest to stop the self-appointed Empress from ruling the world. Sounds comic bookish, but with personalities as varied as the telepath Touchstone, mysterious Macromind, beautiful Fantasia, and ex-villain Haphazard, the book never skimps on action and often dives into questions of identity and responsibility while making sure the heroic tradition that in the novel's world skipped a generation gets picked up again. As a first novel, Progeny accomplishes a lot! And as the final line (see headline) indicates, Zenia and her associates' story is just beginning.
