Overview

Provence A-Z: A Francophile's Essential Handbook by Peter Mayle

The ultimate “dictionary” for lovers of Provence: Peter Mayle's personal selection of the foods, customs and words he finds most fascinating, curious, delicious, or just plain fun.

Though organized from A to Z, this is hardly a conventional work of reference. In more than 170 entries, Peter Mayle—bestselling author of A Year in Provence—writes about subjects as wide-ranging as architecture and zingue-zingue-zoun (in the local patois, a word meant to describe the sound of a violin). And, of course, he writes about food and drink: vin rosé, truffles, olives, melons, bouillabaisse, the cheese that killed a Roman emperor, even a cure for indigestion.

Provence A-Z is a delight for Peter Mayle's ever-growing audience and the perfect complement to any guidebook on Provence, or, for that matter, France.

About the Author

Peter Mayle worked in advertising until he decided to live where he most longed to, Provence, and try his hand at writing. With the success of his first book describing his new life, A Year in Provence, his life took a notable turn for the better. This is his eleventh book including five novels. Recently, he received the Legion d'Honneur from the French government for his cultural contributions. He has been living in Provence with his wife, Jennie, for 18 years now. A Good Year, Ridley Scott's film starring Russell Crowe based on Peter's novel of the same name, was out in 2006.

Peter Mayle has written quite a few books, Fiction and Non-fiction, about the place we know as Provence. This new book is as close as you'll ever get to knowing all about this magical place. Wonderful writing and fantastic pictures this is a great book to read just like one of his novels. Funny and much, much more than an encyclopedia Mayle makes you feel you are there. Just like a good writer should.

I had read this book and several others by this author and I enjoyed them. I bought 2 copies of this book for presents this year. It makes you want to visit Provence! I found that I was tabbing pages of places I wanted to see.

Excerpts from a complete work. May seem like a value till you realize you only bought a chapter.

If you have not yet discovered the joys of Peter Mayle's books, this is a short but sweet way to sample the author at his best. For dedicated fans, another offering in typical hysterical-but-understated Mayle style. I can never get enough of his books, and unrealistically wish he could write 10 new books every year!! Thanks again Peter. You're the best. : )

There is no better read than Peter Mayle's books about France. As the daughter of a French woman, I still get great laughs from the joke he told in "A Year in Provence." I really liked this book and can't wait for the next one!
