Provision expands the frothy, synthesized blue-eyed soul of Cupid & Psyche 85 by emphasizing the bouncy, mechanical dance-pop rhythms and creating lush backing tracks with layers of keyboards. To be certain, it's a pleasant listen, and several tracks are pretty entertaining, but the music is so lightweight and Green Gartside's voice is so thin that the album virtually disappears into thin air, leaving behind no impression. That is, of course, with the exception of the unresolved question of why on earth Miles Davis contributed a trumpet solo to "Oh Patti."

Surpassing the peerless Cupid and Psyche '85 was never going to be easy, and Scritti Politti failed to do so with 1988's Provision. The tunes are far more lightweight than before, with songs like 'Best Thing Ever' and 'Philosophy Now' barely registering a blip. Having said that, Green Gartside and David Gamson really inject some easy-going, summery zest into much of what's on here. The three singles are the highlights: 'Boom! There She Was', featuring a vocoder workout from Roger of Zapp and Roger, is a clipped, state of the art pop treat, and 'First Boy in This Town (Lovesick)' is a swinging, irresistibly likeable peach of a tune. 'Oh Patti (Don't Feel Sorry For Loverboy)' is a dreamy slice of bittersweet beauty, possibly the best thing on the album. As for the rest of what's on here, 'Overnite' is a sugary ballad, very pretty indeed, 'All That We Are' is a slight but infectious tune and 'Bam Salute' is delightfully summery. The production is crisp and fresh sounding and overall is the album is exceptionally likeable and very easy to listen to. However, it lacks an absolute stunner like 'Wood Beez' or 'Absolute' to really up the ante. Nevertheless, Provision is lots of fun and recommended to fans of Cupid and Psyche.
