Description: This is an extremely practical, straightforward book that addresses psychiatric illness in pregnant woman and postpartum mothers with a focus on treatment options.
Purpose: The book succeeds in reviewing the psychiatric care, inclusive of treatment as well as often overlooked related considerations, of the pregnant and postpartum patient with a history of or current psychiatric disorder. It will readily serve as an influential resource in assisting healthcare providers in their interactions with pregnant and postpartum women with mental illness.
Audience: It is intended for primary care physicians, including obstetricians/gynecologists, family physicians, internists, and pediatricians. Although it is written to be practical to these targeted practicing physicians, it could be useful to those in psychiatric training.
Features: Chapters are arranged by illness group, and include chapters on the often disregarded topics of substance abuse and eating disorders in pregnancy. These are augmented by a general introductory chapter and a final chapter that discusses the potential impact on children and infants. Each chapter begins with a paragraph summary and key words. Some chapters include case presentations and discussions. References are listed at the conclusion of each chapter. A thorough index is provided. The addition of a chapter covering psychopharmacology in this patient population would be of great help to the primary care physicians targeted by this book.
