Public Defender

by Joan Hewett, Richard Hewett

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-- In a photographic essay, the Hewetts examine the role of public defender. This is not a romanticized version of a high-paying career in law. This book will appeal to those interested in the criminal justice system and the interpretation of the sixth amendment. The female public defender, an Asian-American, is shadowed as she moves through her day: interviewing her client, representing the defendant in arraignment court, providing guidance in plea bargaining, requesting an alternative sentence when she is convinced that it is a better solution than a lengthy jail term. In addition to learning about Janice Fukai's challenging career, readers will find background information about the public defender system in our country; the specific program in Los Angeles County; and the training, selection, and supervision of novices. Those doing research on careers will find this brief book with its wide margins and many captivating black-and-white photos both interesting and appealing. An excellent resource from a very talented husband and wife team. --Miriam Hansen, Indianhead Federated Library System, Eau Claire, WI
