As those in academia setting know, publishers make a lot of money by coming out with new editions. With APA format, new editions are often necessary as technology advances and styles change. However, I am disappointed with the organization of the sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Sixth Edition. As a psychology graduate student, I am familiar with APA format, but at times need a manual. APA has many rules and stipulations that can be impossible to remember so those who must constantly write in APA, it is necessary to own an APA format manual. The fifth edition was much easier to follow and organized. Perhaps the worst part of the sixth edition was the errors APA had to correct. The sixth edition is slightly smaller than the fifth. I found I had difficulties in finding out in the manual how to correctly format tables and when to italicize or bold. For those who only occasionally have to write APA, I recommend searching the internet for useful APA internet guide sites. I hope the next time APA updates, the manual is better organized. Fortunately, not much has changed from the fifth to the sixth. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy writing APA over other formats, but this manual is useful but difficult to use.

Greeting all, I hope this helps people out as much as it's helped me. This manual is divided into eight clearly understandable chapters which this then broken down into sections to help make sense of all the contents of it. I would suggest that anyone that is in or planning to attend school for Psychology has to obtain this book for their resources. It will help you create your dissertation correctly and other publications. It helps with the APA format, however it does refer to it more online at a web site through the book. This is a necessity if you are in the psychology field. Thank you for your time. Happy Reading!!

I must congratulate the committe of scholars who revised the information for the sixth edition of the APA Publication Manual. It is much abridged from the fifth edition, and it is significantly more organized. However, APA sixth contains a large number of errors, mostly in the examples--which of course are the parts of the manual that most people use. In many instances the rules do not match the examples. These defects are contained in the first printing of the manual. The second printing is reportedly correct. However, many libraries purchased the 1st printing, and many bookstores are still selling the printing with defective information. At this time, the APA has refused to allow customers to return their 1st printing copies or to exchange them for corrected copies. The attitude appears to be that affected customers are welcome to shell out more money and buy the corrected copies, but that APA does not see itself as bearing any responsibility for putting out an accurate product. I would suggest waiting until the second printing. If you have purchased a first edition copy, you can go to the APA site and download the errata. Happy writing!!!

I bought this as a reference book, not a book I had to read from cover to cover before I wrote a paper. In my opinion, it could provide much better sample papers. Since many of us rely on the internet now, it would be nice to have more specific examples of how to properly cite various internet references--it seemed there was very few. To be fair, I didn't compare the competitors so I don't know that they are any better. I just recommend you look through this book before you buy. Barnes and Noble had this behind the counter, so unless you leave your spot in line to review, you'll be holding people up. (Though after I got home, I wished I did.) The store could help as well by putting these out where customers can review them. To have to stand in line just to request to look at a book sucks and is a bad practice.
