In her previous book, What Cops Know ( LJ 12/90), Fletcher (journalism, Loyola Univ., Chicago) interviewed Chicago police officers to gain insight into the technical and psychological aspects of being a cop. Pure Cop is a ``continuation, and completion'' of that book. Here, she interviews some 80 Chicago police officers from various specialized units: bomb squad, arson, hostage negotiation, major accidents, crime scene investigation, etc. In their own words (from a few sentences to a couple of pages), officers relate cases, anecdotes, and insights from their years of experience. The quotes are well chosen--conveying an authentic sense of what police work is about. They are not attributed but brief biographies of contributors are included, and Fletcher notes that many of these officers are renowned among police for their expertise. This is a revealing and absorbing book that gets inside the real police world. Public libraries will want to own both titles.-- Mary Jane Brustman, SUNY at Albany Libs.
