Overview

Puttin' on the Ritz

He isn't remembered for any signature songs, though Broadway and nightclub raconteur Harry Richman recorded the most popular versions of a pair of '20s chestnuts, "Puttin' on the Ritz" and "There's Danger in Your Eyes, Cherie." Those two lead off his first CD collection, ASV/Living Era's valuable 25-track set Puttin' on the Ritz. There are no major (or minor) omissions here, the offerings ranging from his breakout, "Birth of the Blues," to a pair of 1930 McHugh & Fields standards that he shared popular honors with -- "On the Sunny Side of the Street" (also done by Ted Lewis, plus a few others) and "Exactly Like You" (Ruth Etting's version also did well). Elsewhere, Richman interpolates songs or themes more reminiscent of better-known names of the '20s, like Rudy Valée ("Singing a Vagabond Song"), Bing Crosby ("Muddy Water," "Pennies From Heaven"), and Cliff Edwards ("[I Can't Give You] Anything but Love"). Similar to Jolson, he was a better performer than a singer, and melodrama didn't suit his lower tenor, which makes this collection a historical relic (but undoubtedly the best one on Richman available).
