Chapter 2.
In the Beginning...
On the morning of June 19, 2004 I sent the following e-mail to my wife who was away on a business trip: "I had an idea for a book/article while I was in the shower this morning: Quality Sex, Using Quality Tools to Improve the Sexual Experience. This idea and the fact that I had it while running my hands over my naked, soapy, and wet body are probably not related but the charting of additional occurrences and plotting the results on a Scatter Diagram may show a possible positive correlation. (Actually the fact that I was thinking about Quality Tools while running my hands over my naked, wet, soapy body may indicate the need for additional therapy).

My thesis is that using the Plan-Do-Check-Act process improvement methodology will result in consistent performance, fewer errors, complete customer satisfaction and an improved supplier chain (actually chain and other restraining devices are optional). I need to develop this further and imagine it will require intensive and extensive field-testing and experimentation. While in such endeavors it is often common to enlist the assistance of an outside professional for consultations I feel that enlisting the help of a "pro" may complicate matters for a monogamous researcher. More to follow." Obviously I had had an epiphany of sorts. I often tend to look at things with an eye toward quality, logistics and their attendant processes. Could the sexual act be any different? Were there, in fact, opportunities to utilize proven quality methodologies to achieve a more blissful and satisfying union between two souls? This was an idea and endeavor that I was keen to investigate. As a Certified Quality Technician and a Certified Quality Improvement Associate I felt that I was familiar enough with the concepts and applications of quality tools and process methodologies that I would be able to apply their uses to this new and challenging area. And I have had sex. So it was all there, right in front of me. I first considered a "re-engineering" approach. Perhaps I should benchmark sexual performance by investigating and researching the processes of some of the "industry" standard leaders? Surely the videos of such "sexperts" as Jenna Jameson and Nina Hartley could provide that quantum leap in adapting new processes and achieving better results. After further consideration I rejected this approach. Perhaps in this case the more "incremental" approach to process improvement was preferred. These industry leaders may have standards, techniques and capabilities that make it unrealistic for the more mundane of us to emulate.

(Not to mention that the procurement cost and maintenance/upkeep of a PVC cat suit, leather corset and other such garments are prohibitive for most people.) I decided to stick to what I knew best, the tried-and-true quality, process improvement methods. Plan-Do-Check-Act would become my new sexual mantra (in addition to my customary begging and pleading).

This book if nothing else brings about a simple and uncomplicated way of doing business. This can be appplied to all aspects of business and to all levels of management. The concepts can be applied in such a way that meetings do not have to be formed to get to the next meeting to make sure that the process is going smoothly. On a side note I noticed the footnotes one evening and I highly suggest that you read them as you progress through the book. It is good to see something like this finally on the market.

I thought that he took the conveluted processes of management and turned it into a streamline and basic system. The cover throws you for a loop but when you get past it, the concepts that are inside make the book worth every penny. Not to mention the foot-notes.... great stuff.

I got this book at the suggestion of a co-worker. I was told that the foot-notes alone would be worth the cost of the book and they were right. I have never laughed so much from a managing process book. As I moved through the book I learned many things that in most cases you would think would be common sense. However, with the process being so bogged down in our modern world I think the business world needs a book like this to get things back to basics.

This book was given to me by a friend and I actually ordered my own copy. I am much more of an internet person but for anyone who is looking for a better way to get things done, this is the book to read. The book is not about sex (exactly) but I guess it could be applied to that aspect of life. The book is short and brings into perspective that a better working environment is possible. I have to say that the cover is a little off-beat but if you read the footnotes, and I highly suggest you read the footnotes, the cover really brings the book together.

I never realized how interesting and fun qualitative analysis could be! He puts such a twist on it you don't want to put it down.

Bought book for wrong reason, enjoyed for right. Only true quality book I have read from cover to cover without falling asleep. I actually now understand some of the basic quality techniques and though questionable for the bedroom, definitely a possibility if you step outside of where you believe TQM is used. Enjoyable footnotes and a definite must read.
