Genevieve Jack did it again with her third book in the Knight Games Series, Queen of the Hill. The author weaves you through the pages of this book making you feel as if you’re right there with the characters as the plot unfolds. Right from the very beginning I quickly escaped into this book which left me thirsty for more …. talk about one hell of a book hangover when I was through. This paranormal urban fantasy is packed with captivating characters one can’t help but to get emotionally attached to; especially Grateful Knight who is the smart, sassy heroine and the Monks Hill Witch. She definitely has her hands full… not only is she trying to plan a wedding but has some unforeseen challenges leading up to the big day; her “Happily Ever After” starts to look grim when Tabetha the Salem’s Witch comes knocking on her door wanting to collect on a debt which unfortunately happens to be her caretaker/ fiancé Rick…..leave it to a man to strike a deal with the devil, well in this case it’s a nasty evil witch who makes any of the Disney Witches look like kittens. Suffice it to say Grateful isn’t about to let a beautiful, evil, psycho witch take her man and thanks to her ever so cynical/sarcastic familiar Poe (who happens to be a Raven), her fiancé Rick and a couple of vampires they all join forces to try and figure out a way to clear the debt that is owned and to solve the disappearance of Julius who is the leader of the vampire coven. From the very beginning of this book I was on a mind-blowing, adventurous, fight for your life adrenaline rush, there were many moments that I couldn’t help but laugh out loud and even yell out “what are you thinking” but this is the result of a truly amazing author who can take you away to a world full of magic with just her words.

So far I love this series. I found it by accident, and I am glad I did. Start with the first book, The ghost and the graveyard, then Kick the candle. Cannot wait for the next book.

The author has certainly settled in to the world she has created, there is more certainty about locations and the characters interact in far more realistic ways. This made it easier for me to subsume myself in this fantasy world and really enjoy the story. Yes, there are still some things that bother me about the writing and the scenarios but I have found that they are becoming fewer as time passes and the series continues. Grateful is certainly responding well to her new situation live and is now beginning to accept the responsibility for the town on to her shoulders. This is never more clearly demonstrated than when she "interferes" with the choice of leader for the Vampire Coven, I particularly enjoyed the way she argued with herself about the rights and wrongs of doing so, really brought the character to life in ways that she hasn't in previous books. The downside to it all was that the truth of what happened was pretty obvious from Grateful's first visit to her sister's house (remind anyone else of Grimm's fairytales?) I have to admit I raced through this book and was intrigued to find out what happened next. Even if I find Grateful's relationship with Rick extremely uncomfortable - the co-dependent nature of it makes me feel that it is neither of their choices and that without the magical element of their want their would be no relationship. Not that she would be any better off with Logan. The character of Poe definitely brings some much needed light relief. He is one raven with attitude and his snarky comments really break the tension in a way that does not detract from the story. In all honesty, the bits incorporating him in to the story are some of the best bits of the book. This is a good solid, fantasy read with a magical system that is clearly explained and allows each magical character to have their strengths and weaknesses. Because of this any challenge that comes up has multiple solutions and you can never be sure which way Grateful is going to go - although she does seem to favour the violent Nightshade led approach.

I thoroughly enjoyed QUEEN OF THE HILL. Grateful is a fun little witch, even if she exudes snark now and again. I also loved her familiar, Poe. What’s not to love about a raven who can share his wisdom, even if he needs a doggie door to get inside the witch’s house? Queen of the Hill continues Genevieve Jack’s wonderful Knight Games series, but worry not. If you have not delved into it before, I think you can start here with no problem. The series continues in Ms. Jack’s new release, MOTHER MAY I, so if you’d like to check the series out, now is the time.
