Queen of Tomorrow by Sherry D. Ficklin

Sophie—now Catherine, Grand Duchess of Russia—had a tough first year at Imperial Court. Married at sixteen to Grand Duke Peter, heir to the throne, and settled in their own palace, things start to look up. As a new day dawns, Catherine thinks only of securing her future, and the future of their country, during one of the greatest political upheavals of her time. Fighting desperately against forces that try to depose the Empress Elizabeth and put the young Prince Ivan on her throne, Catherine soon finds herself in the middle of a war brewing between her beloved Prussia and her new empire. While navigating the fragile political landscape, she quickly realizes that she has only begun to discover the tangled web of deceit and infidelity woven over the lavish court of Oranienbaum Palace.
When a strange and delicate alliance forms between the young couple, Catherine glimpses a future of happiness, only to see it vanish at the hands of those who still seek to end her life—and prevent her reign. Out of favor with the empress and running out of options, Catherine must sacrifice her own innocence on the altar of Russia if she is to save the nation and herself. To survive, she will have to do the unthinkable, betray those closest to her and become something greater and more dangerous than she ever imagined she could be… a queen.

About the Author

Sherry D. Ficklin is a full time writer from Colorado where she lives with her husband, four kids, two dogs, and a fluctuating number of chickens and house guests. She is the author of several YA novels ranging from contemporary romance to science fiction. In her spare time she co-hosts the Pop Lit Divas radio show and is constantly trying to take over the world.

I loved this series and couldn't wait for each one! I love this story. I went to Catherine The Great's museum show in Memphis when I was in school and it was amazing! I had no idea that this was the story behind the woman who was larger than life! It is truly a great series!

Reviewed by Tracy A. Fischer for Readers' Favorite What a read, what a read, what a read! That’s all I can say after finishing Queen of Tomorrow, the second book in the Stolen Empire series by author Sherry D. Ficklin. Follow the story of Sophie, now Catherine, the Grand Duchess of Russia, through the early parts of her marriage to Grand Duke Peter, the heir to the Russian throne, and the early part of her life as a royal in Russia. Peter and Catherine have settled into their own palace, and their attention has turned to securing the future of their country. Catherine’s beloved Prussia is at risk, and with it, she is as well. Peter and Catherine have reached a delicate understanding, perhaps even bordering on a fondness for one another, but even that is put at risk with one vile act. Will Catherine survive long enough to reach a true peace with Peter, maybe even a happy future, or will her life be ended by those determined that she will never rule? Queen of Tomorrow is simply a fantastic read. Over the past few years, I have found myself to be more and more drawn to fiction marketed towards young adults, not because I don’t have the ability to read more sophisticated works, but simply because I feel the young adult genre is where some of the most well-written, creative and wonderful works are right now. And this book certainly did not disappoint me. Author Sherry D. Ficklin has done a masterful job of writing an engaging and exciting piece of historical fiction and I simply could not put this book down once I started it. Queen of Tomorrow would appeal to any lover of great historical fiction, young adult or not, and I am very pleased to highly recommend it.
