Overview

The Queen of the Land of Quails is preparing to travel to the mysterious Volcanic Islands to meet twelve of her wonderful new friends. After she leaves her loyal subjects in charge of keeping her castle safe from harm for the next year, Queen Vermita boards a boat and heads out on her latest adventure.

The Queen's first stop is to visit her friend Nicole at the black sand beach at the bottom of a beautiful valley where she learns all about the hawksbill sea turtles and hawaiian monk seal. Her journey takes her to a new place every month, where she explores volcanoes, pink and orange sand beaches, walks along the hot lava, scuba dives under the sea, and learns about all the flora and fauna that call the islands their home. Along the way, the Queen meets many amazing new friends who are each special in their own way.

In this continuing tale, an adventuresome queen travels outside her castle to the Volcanic Islands, where she learns how important it is to respect the natural wonders of her kingdom.

Reviewed by Mamta Madhavan for Readers' Favorite Let us join the Queen of the Land of Quails on her latest adventure to the Volcanic Islands in the story Queen Vernita Conquers the Volcanic Islands by Dr. Dawn Menge. Queen Vernita is all packed and ready to leave and she asks her subjects to keep her castle safe from harm while she is away. Queen Vernita plans to visit twelve new friends and she has already sent out twelve visitation announcements to them. She first plans to visit her friend Nicole who lives at the Black Sand Beach and Queen Vernita has a good time staying with Nicole. She asks Nicole to keep her part of nature safe so that monk seals and hawksbill sea turtles can thrive and grow. Each place she visits shows her the beauty of nature and she realizes how important it is to respect the natural wonders of her kingdom. Apart from teaching young readers to respect nature and preserve it, the story also educates children with a lot of information about each place Queen Vernita visits. Pamela Snyder makes the concept and the information palpable with her colorful illustrations that make the book arresting and captivating to child readers. It is a good story for tutors and educators to read aloud to their students in classrooms as it makes learning fun and interactive as they travel to twelve different places along with Queen Vernita. Whether it is the Black Sand Beach, tide pools, tuff rings, Rhett Syndrome, limestone, or sailboats, children learn a lot of new things through this story in an interesting way. It is a good book for readers of all ages as well because there is a lot of information which many adults wouldn't know. The story is simple and neatly expressed, making it easy for young readers to understand.
