Born in Boston, Stephen Bodio wandered into Magdalena, New Mexico, in the 1970s while on his way to Montana and never left. He was accompanied by Betsy Huntington, who was twenty years his senior; the couple had been inseparable from the day they met. After stumbling upon a vintage home along the highway, they settled into a country life; it was the perfect way for the two of them to make their lives together in an out-of-the-way place.
It’s through Bodio that Betsy’s story is painted in such memorable passages that soon captivate readers. Together they made their home among the mountains of New Mexico, returning to a simple life of hunting, falconry, and becoming acquainted with the local reptiles and insects of the desert. A lover of nature, Bodio here explains in vivid detail his time spent in the wilderness. He found himself the center of his neighbors’ attention when they discovered his endless fascination with the local fauna, from snakes and birds to coursing dogs. He became accustomed to Magdalena through the people and wildlife, even joining in the biggest festival on the calendar: the Quemado Rodeo, better known by locals as the Street Dance and Brawl.
From the Spanish term meaning “the heart’s true home,” Querencia captivates and settles the heart. It is an astonishing read for those looking for an escape from the hustle of the big city, or just seeking to find solitude in the country life.

Steve Bodio¿s story grabs you and clings to your heart. The knowledge, laughter, pain and tears of the author flow from the pages to your soul. You will come away with an intimate feel for the New Mexico environment, wildlife, and the robust & diversified people who make it their home. From the first page, I didn¿t want to put the book down or the story to end.
In an era where illiterates like Shaquile O'Neal and Tim Allen hit the top ten list with their inane blather, it was a gift from the Gods to stumble upon this gem. When I put Querencia (kur-en-see-uh) down after having read it in one sitting, I asked myself, 'How in the hell is it that I have never heard of this Bodio character before?' He is a MASTERFUL author, a naturalist on par with ANY giant your memory or imagination may conjur, and as genuinely sensitive a man as there ever was. Only after MUCH research did I learn that East coast publishers hate him (his other works explain why: he's smarter than most all publishing execs and editors COMBINED, which is intimidating if you are a micro-apendaged ivy leaguer with a hi-lighter), and that's why he is not a, 'sold' author. Too bad. If Oprah read this, she'd cry herself into a migraine and then make Bodio a NY Times #1 seller: it's that good. IF YOU READ IT BASED UPON THIS RECOMMENDATION AND DO NOT THINK MY ASSESSMENT IS ACCURATE, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME AND SET ME STRAIGHT! I am confident that I will not be hearing from you.
This book is incredibly written. Mr. Bodio has a wonderful mastery of words that can only be explained by reading this book. One would not expect an author whose works include books on Falconry and Firearms to have the ability to write about love so perfectly. I recommend this novel to anyone who loves the southwest, anyone who has loved, or anyone that has been touched by someone who left them too early. Please indulge your senses and see true, real love written like it has never been before.
