ABOUT THE BOOK

Pride and Prejudice was first published in 1813. The novel opens with a rich, handsome, single man renting an estate close to the Bennet family, a middle class family living in the English countryside. The storyline revolves broadly around the life of Elizabeth Bennet, the second daughter of the Bennet family as she struggles with her notions and the antics of her sisters while trying to realize her true love in a man a man she used to hate.

Pride and Prejudice is regularly featured in lists that enumerate the best fictional works of all time, and is widely considered to be Ms. Austens most popular work. Yet, Austen was not entirely happy with her finished product. Writing to her sister Cassandra, Ms. Austen said the novel was too light and bright, and called herself well satisfied enough with the book.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

A young, rich, and single man by the name of Charles Bingley has rented the estate at Netherfield Park, and the neighborhood is excited about the new arrivals. Perhaps no one is more excited than Mrs. Bennet, who has five unmarried daughters, moderate income, a property that is entailed, and a husband who has no patience for her demands or the initiative to marry off his daughters.

At a dance, it is immediately apparent that Mr. Bingley is attracted to the elder Bennet daughter, Jane, the good-natured daughter. While Bingley is endearing himself to the matriarchs and neighbours with his ready smile, his friend, Mr. Darcy, antagonizes the Bennet family with his insolence. Jane falls in love with Mr. Bingley, and while the attraction is mutual she does not show her true feelings. The house party departs for London soon after, and it seems like they have gone for good.
