About the Author

Andrea (Andi) Penner grew up in southern California, lived for a decade in northern Arizona, and has called New Mexico home since 1994 when she entered the doctoral program in English at the University of New Mexico. In her dissertation, "The Original In Ourselves": Native American Women Writers and the Construction of Indian Women's Identity, Andi developed work begun earlier at Northern Arizona University in her Master's thesis, At Once, Gentle and Powerful: Voices of the Landscape in the Poetry of Luci Tapahonso. Her essays have appeared in Studies in American Indian Literature, Teaching English in the Two-Year College, and Dead Housekeeping (an online short-prose publication). Her poems have been selected for The Rag, Duke City Fix, Conceptions Southwest, Illumina, Epiphany, Northern Arizona Review, Perspectives, and other publications. When East Was North (2012), her first collection of poetry, was published by Mercury Heartlink.

Andi has enjoyed careers in college teaching, education administration, consulting, technical writing, and professoinal communications, and has served as the president of the New Mexico State Poetry Society (2015-2017). She is a founding member of the Crosstown Poets, a supportive writing group dedicated to expanding the reach of poetry in Central New Mexico through readings and workshops.
