Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cheryl Williams Chang
Raccoons are mostly nocturnal animals that live in North and South America. Weighing between eight to twenty-two pounds, there are only three varieties of raccoons. They live within trees, rocks, or on the ground. Female raccoons can give birth to up to seven babies that are called kits. These babies remain with the mother for most of their first year, before they leave home to live on their own. Raccoons look adorable with their fuzzy appearance and interesting markings. It is important to beware, though. Raccoons are wild animals with sharp teeth. Raccoons who hide from predators can live for up to sixteen years. This nonfiction picture book is the fifth book in a series of books about nocturnal animals. It provides young readers with interesting facts about raccoons as well as colorful photographs of raccoons involved in various activities. This book is written with the kindergartner or first grader in mind. The text on each page is simple and clear, using a large font and age appropriate vocabulary. Within the book, a glossary, index, reference page, and table of contents can be found. This book will make a perfect match in an elementary school library, social studies class, and/or science class. Part of the "Nocturnal Animals:" series. Reviewer: Cheryl Williams Chang
